PLHC Named Scholarship Information for 2011-2012

To apply: Fill out an application form and submit a separate application essay for each scholarship for which you are applying. Each application essay should briefly state (one to two paragraphs) how you fulfill the criteria for that particular scholarship and why you believe you should be the recipient.

For any scholarship that considers financial need, students must submit a FAFSA form to UMSL's Financial Aid Office by March 1, 2011. The final deadline for applications is Friday, April 15th.

American Association of University Women Scholarship

History: These scholarships are funded by annual gifts from members of the Ballwin-Chesterfield chapter of the AAUW. Besides the financial award, members of the AAUW invite holders to social occasions and provide helpful guidance.

Number of awardees: Varies

Criteria for decision: A female Honors College undergraduate student, out of high school at least ten years, who has demonstrated financial need. Student must be in good standing in the Honors College. The recipient must be enrolled in at least 6 credit hours per semester to qualify. The scholarship must be used for tuition and/or books. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of Award: Varies from $500/year to $1000/year. Scholarship is renewable.


Chancellor's Council Scholarship

History: This fund was established in 1992 by the Chancellor's Council under the leadership of Chancellor Blanche M. Touhill. Over time the Chancellor's Councils and
individual members of the Council have contributed to this fund.

Number of awardees: Varies.

Criteria for decision: Students who have shown academic leadership and demonstrate financial need on the FAFSA. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of Award: $1000/year. The Chancellor's Council Scholarship is renewable.


Dennis R. Bohnenkamp Scholarship

History: The Bohnenkamp fund was established by the Pierre Laclede Honors College alumni chapter at the time of Associate Dean Dennis Bohnenkamp's retirement and donations have come from former students and UMSL faculty and staff. Further donations came as memorials after Dennis's death in 2006. At his wish, the scholarship is intended to support the study of the humanities--especially the study of the humanities by those in other majors.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Honors College student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. Must have at least 50 credit hours (including at least 24 at UMSL); preference to those with 90 or more. Their record must demonstrate achievement in the humanities (can include the fine arts). Applicants need not be humanities majors, and must explain their commitment to and enjoyment of the humanities in their application essay.

Amount of award: $500 Fall semester only. Scholarship is not renewable.


Earl C. and Frances E. AuBuchon Memorial Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established by Susanne AuBuchon Brauer and Timothy Brauer to honor Earl and Frances AuBuchon and their commitment to their children's education. Its purpose is to encourage first generation college attendance.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: The scholarship is available to full-time students who are residents of St. Louis City or County and whose parents did not graduate from a four-year college or university.

Amount of award: Varies, up to $1500/year. Scholarship is renewable.


Engineering Alumni Scholarship

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Must be an Honors College student in good standing, while following the Honors and Engineering curriculum.

Amount of award: $1000/year. Scholarship is not renewable.


Erwin & Adelaide Branahl Scholarship in Honors and Engineering

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: An Honors College student who is following the Honors and Engineering curriculum. Preference is given to new freshmen applicants. The Branahl awards are diversity awards: women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Amount of award: $1500/year. The Branahl scholarship is awaded for one year, but students may reapply.


Harriett Woods Scholarship

History: This fund was established by a generous gift from the Honorable Harriett Woods, the first woman to be elected Lt. Governor of Missouri. The fund supports female students who demonstrate academic promise and leadership potential. This scholarship lives on to remember Harriet Woods and to remind all of us of her strong commitment to leadership, particularly in the St. Louis community.

Number of awardees: Varies according to fund income, but always at least one.

Criteria for decision: Honors college female student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. An applicant's academic records, leadership experience and ambitions are all considered.

Amount of award: Varies, but up to $1,500/year. The Woods Scholarship is awarded for one year, but students may reapply.


International Studies Scholarship

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Honors College student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. Student must be studying a foreign language with a modern emphasis.

Amount of award: $1000/year. Scholarship is renewable, but the student must reapply.


Jung Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established in 2009 through the generosity of Richard Jung (UMSL BA in English, 1973) and his partner Janice Anderson. The award is open primarily to new freshmen; however, sophomores and juniors may apply. It is renewable for up to four years. The Jung Scholarship is a merit award for students whose academic and school record suggests high potential for a career in teaching.

Number of awardees: One (1)

Criteria for decision: This scholarship will be awarded primarily to new freshmen who demonstrate academic promise; however, sophomores and juniors may apply. The main criterion is academic merit as measured by GPA, class rank, and ACT or SAT test scores. Admission essays, letters of recommendation, and extra-curricular school activities may also be considered. Where equally meritorious applicants present, the award will be based on student need, based on FAFSA data. Holders of the Jung scholarship are encouraged to consider careers in primary or secondary education.

Amount of Award: $2500/year. Scholarship is renewable, but the student must reapply.


Macy's Honors Scholarship

History: This is our largest endowed fund and was first established by the May Company Foundation in 1993. The Foundation wanted to encourage the development of an economically and socially diverse student body and to support students who were residents of the City of St. Louis.

Number of awardees: Varies.

Criteria for decision: Preference to current or newly accepted Honors College students demonstrating financial need and academic promise. Additional consideration will be extended to students with minority status and/or residence in the city of St. Louis. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2010.

Amount of award: $2,000/year. Scholarship is renewable.


Robert and Paulette Bliss Study Abroad Scholarship

History: Established in 1998, this scholarship is intended to encourage students to undertake exchange study at a foreign university or institute.

Number of awardees: 1 per year.

Criteria for decision: This scholarship is open only to Honors College students studying abroad under the auspices of the UM-St. Louis Center for International Studies.

Amount of award: Varies, but at least $750/year.


Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established by the Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers (MoNEP). The mission of the Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers is to provide a forum for individuals interested in the field of nature photography and the environment, support education, gather and disseminate information, and promote nature photography as an art form and medium of communication.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Full-time Honors students of junior or senior standing. Open to all majors, the student must demonstrate an interest in photography, especially as it relates to the environment. The recipient must present a portfolio of his or her results annually at a MoNEP membership meeting.

Amount of award: $1500/year. The Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers Scholarship is not renewable.


Scholarship in Memory of Julie and Robin Kerry

History:
In memory of her daughters, Robin and Julie Kerry, Ginny Kerry established this scholarship.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Honors College students who will be sophomores and who are committed to their education, work on a part-time basis, and are in good standing within the Honors College. Students should be sophomores when they receive the scholarship.

Amount of award: $500/year. Scholarship is not renewable; new awardee each year.

James Doyle Scholarship for the Study of Social Justice

History: This scholarship is awarded to students doing independent study work that addresses issues of social justice.

Criteria for decision: Honors students of any major who are planning on completing a relevant independent study project or internship in the next semester may consult the application for additional information. Please contact your Honors College advisor if you have questions.

Number of awardees: Varies.

Amount of award: Varies from $250 to $1250. This scholarship is not renewable.

The deadlines for applications will be December 10 (for study to be undertaken during the Spring semester) and May 1 (for study to be undertaken during the Summer or Fall semesters).
