New Honors College Students (Freshmen & Transfer Students)

PLHC Named Scholarship Information for 2011-2012

To apply: Fill out an application form and submit a separate application essay for each scholarship for which you are applying. Each application essay should briefly state (one to two paragraphs) how you fulfill the criteria for that particular scholarship and why you believe you should be the recipient.

For any scholarship that considers financial need, students must submit a FAFSA form to UMSL's Financial Aid Office by March 1, 2011. The final deadline for applications is Friday, April 15th.

Priority deadline for new Honors College students (freshmen and transfer students): March 1st, 2011


Opportunity Scholars Program

The Opportunity Scholars Program is open to UMSL entering freshmen. Honors College freshmen are encouraged to read the criteria for this scholarship and apply if interested. This is a very good opportunity for full tuition, room and board. The application process for the scholarship is explained in detail on the Opportunity Scholars Program Website. Chancellor's Council Scholarship

History: This fund was established in 1992 by the Chancellor's Council under the leadership of Chancellor Blanche M. Touhill. The Chancellor's Councils and
individual members of the Council have contributed to this fund.

Number of awardees: Varies.

Criteria for decision: Students who have shown academic leadership and demonstrate financial need on the FAFSA. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of award: $1000/year. Scholarship is renewable.


Earl C. and Frances E. AuBuchon Memorial Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established by Susanne AuBuchon Brauer and Timothy Brauer to honor Earl and Frances AuBuchon and their commitment to their children's education. Its purpose is to encourage first generation college attendance.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: The scholarship is available to full-time students who are residents of St. Louis City or County and whose parents did not graduate from a four-year college or university.

Amount of award: Varies, up to $1500/year. Scholarship is renewable if a minimum 3.2 cumulative GPA is maintained.


Engineering Alumni Scholarship

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Must be an Honors College student in good standing, while following the Honors and Engineering curriculum.

Amount of award: $1000/year. Scholarship is not renewable.


Erwin & Adelaide Branahl Scholarship in Honors and Engineering

Number of awardees: 2

Criteria for decision: An Honors College student who is following the Honors and Engineering curriculum. Preference is given to new freshmen applicants. The Branahl awards are diversity awards: women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply.

Amount of award: $1500/year. The Branahl Scholarship is awarded for one year, but students may reapply.


Honors Scholarship in Physics

Number of awardees: 1

History: This award was established in 2010 by the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Its purpose is for the support of a new Honors Student majoring in Physics.

Criteria for decision: Full-time, incoming freshmen, who are Honors College students and who intend to major in Physics. Applicants' schoool and ACT (or SAT) record indicates established abilities in science and mathematics. The student's high school and test record should at minimum qualify him or her for immediate entry into Calculus I (Math 1800). Preference will be given to students with advanced credit for Math 1800.

Amount of award: $1000/year. The Honors Scholarship in Physics is renewable for up to three additional years, with satisfactory progress in Physics, and a minimum 3.2 GPA.


Harriett Woods Scholarship

History: This fund was established by a generous gift from the Honorable Harriett Woods, the first woman to be elected Lt. Governor of Missouri. The fund supports female students who demonstrate academic promise and leadership potential. This scholarship lives on to remember Harriet Woods and to remind all of us of her strong commitment to leadership, particularly in the St. Louis community.

Number of awardees: Varies according to fund income, but always at least one.

Criteria for decision: Honors college female student, following the Honors curriculum and in good standing. An applicant's academic records, leadership experience and ambitions are all considered.

Amount of award: Varies, but up to $1,500/year. The Woods Scholarship is awarded for one year, but students may reapply.


Jung Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established in 2009 through the generosity of Richard Jung (UMSL BA in English, 1973) and his partner Janice Anderson. The award is open primarily to new freshmen; however, sophomores and juniors may apply. It is renewable for up to four years. The Jung Scholarship is a merit award for students whose academic and school record suggests high potential for a career in teaching.

Number of awardees: One (1)

Criteria for decision:This scholarship will be awarded primarily to new freshman who demonstrate academic promise; however, sophomores and juniors may apply. The main criterion is academic merit as measured by GPA, class rank, and ACT or SAT test scores. Admission essays, letters of recommendation, and extra-curricular school activities may also be considered. Where equally meritorious applicants present, the award will be based on student need, based on FAFSA data. Holders of the Jung scholarship are encouraged to consider careers in primary or secondary education.

Amount of Award: $2500/year. The Jung Scholarship is renewable.


Peter W. and Helen M. Goode Scholarship

History: Established by Missouri State Senator Wayne Goode and his family in honor of Senator Goode's parents. This generous fund is meant to assist the college in attracting highly qualified and diverse applicants from Missouri high schools.

Number of awardees: Varies but is intended primarily for new freshmen.

Criteria for decision: Academic achievement and potential, Missouri residence, and financial need. The awardees should reflect the diversity of the St. Louis region in terms of ethnicity and gender. At least 50% of holders should be female students. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of award: $1000/year. The Goode Scholarship is renewable.


The William T. Kemper Foundation Access to Excellence Honors Scholarship

History: The William T. Kemper Foundation Access to Excellence Honors Scholarship began in the 2009-10 academic year in an effort to recruit and retain qualified, minority freshman for the Honors College and UMSL.

Number of Awardees: Varies

Criteria for Decision: This $5,000 scholarship ($2,500 from Kemper and $2,500 from the Pierre Laclede Honors College) will be awarded to candidates who meet the following criteria:

Amount of Award: $5,000/year. The Kemper Scholarship is renewable for up to three additional years in its full amount as long as the student remains in good standing in the Pierre Laclede Honors College (3.2 cumulative GPA or higher, full-time enrollment, and making good progress toward both the major discipline and Honors College graduation requirements).


Macy's Honors Scholarship

History: This is our largest endowed fund and was first established by the May Company Foundation in 1993. The Foundation wanted to encourage the development of an economically and socially diverse student body and to support students who were residents of the City of St. Louis.

Number of awardees: Varies.

Criteria for decision: Preference to current or newly accepted Honors College students demonstrating financial need and academic promise. Additional consideration will be extended to students with minority status and/or residence in the city of St. Louis. Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of award: $2,000/year. The Macy's Scholarship is renewable.


Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers Scholarship

History: This scholarship was established by the Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers (MoNEP). The mission of the Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers is to provide a forum for individuals interested in the field of nature photography and the environment, support education, gather and disseminate information, and promote nature photography as an art form and medium of communication.

Number of awardees: 1

Criteria for decision: Full-time Honors students of junior or senior standing. Open to all majors, the student must demonstrate an interest in photography, especially as it relates to the environment. The recipient must present a portfolio of his or her results annually at a MoNEP membership meeting.

Amount of award: $1500/year. The Missouri Nature and Environmental Photographers Scholarship is not renewable.


Sandra and Virgil Van Trease Reach for Excellence Scholarship in Business Administration

History: This endowed scholarship was given by Sandra Van Trease (a graduate of the College of Business Administration) and her husband to support a business major who shows academic promise and financial need.

Number of awardees: 1

Stipulations: This scholarship is awarded by the Honors College on the nomination of the College of Business Administration. Interested applicants should contact the College of Business Administration at 314-516-5883 or visit the College of Business Administration homepage.

Criteria for decision: Intended for new students who meet the following requirements.

Note: In order to receive priority consideration for this scholarship, your FAFSA information must be submitted by March 1st, 2011.

Amount of award: $1500/year. Award will be divided evenly between fall and winter semesters and will be renewable so long as candidate continues to meet the listed criteria and maintains full time enrollment at UMSL.
