We are a chemical biology laboratory. We use synthetic organic chemistry to prepare novel compounds that can serve as supramolecular receptors or that can function as do more complex natural molecules. We have designed and prepared a family of compounds that function as cation channels in phospholipid bilayers. Another family of structures mediate anion transport through membranes. In addition, we have prepared receptors that permit us to examine weak intermolecular (“supramolecular”) forces that pervade chemical and biological phenomena.
