Each of us has a subject that we use because it says something meaningful about who we are. For me, that subject is rocks and water. The landscape surrounding Lake Superior is what consistently inspires me. I want to communicate to my viewer something about this subject that makes me come back to it over and over again. Although the Superior region is truly beautiful, I want to say something more about it, to probe beyond the beauty. I like to play with space and create places that appear real at first glance but contain something unusual. A compositional tool that I occasionally use is the inverted T. Using this unusual format echoes the way we see things. Our distant view is narrowed while our near view is expanded. I am interested in the way we experience a place, moving our head to take in more than just one static view. I want my work to recreate that feeling. Because we are moving as we see things, we often see more than one point of view will allow. I like to "bend" space allowing a place to be seen in the way we experience the landscape.
