International Admissions

Undergraduate Applicants

In order to expedite the processing of your application, you may email application materials to our office. Official items must still be sent at a later date.

  1. Application form

    •  Refer to the international student application and $40 application fee

  2. Proof of English proficiency

    • Minimum requirements are 61 TOEFL, 5.5 IELTS, or 44 PTE-A

  3. Official transcripts

    • Students in their last year of high school should submit transcripts for all years completed thus far. Students who have completed high school must submit final transcripts and degree certificates or exam results.

    • Students who have studied at a college or university must submit university transcripts to date. If you have completed more than 24 credit hours at a university, you do not need to submit high school transcripts.

    • Transcripts are required from all high schools or universities attended.

  2. Statement of finances

    • An official bank statement must show funds to cover one year of expenses, be in English, and be less than six months old

  3. Affidavit of support

    • If the bank document is not in the student's name, the account holder must sign an affidavit of support

  4. Copy of any current US visa

Approximate expenses are noted in the chart below. Per US regulations, this amount must be shown in order to obtain documentation for a student visa. Actual costs may vary, and students are not billed until arriving on campus and registering for classes.

All degree-seeking international applicants are automatically reviewed for competitive scholarships, with awards ranging up to $10,000 per year. A separate application form is not required.

All materials should be submitted before the priority deadlines noted below. It may be still possible to be considered for admission after these dates, though a review cannot be guaranteed.

UMSL awards credit hours to students who have completed certain international examinations. Credit may be gained though the following exams:

Advanced Level Exams (AS-Level and A-Level)
International Baccalaureate (IB)
College Board Advanced Placement Program (AP)

Other international exams may evaluated on a course-by-course basis under the procedures for international transfer credit.  

A maximum of 30 credit hours from these programs may be used toward degree requirements at UMSL. In cases where the student has completed both the exam and the equivalent course, duplicate credit is not awarded.

Students who have attended a college or university outside of the US may be eligible for transfer credit at UMSL. Refer to our transfer credit guidelines for procedures and information.

Applicants who do not meet the minimum English scores may apply for conditional admission by enrolling in ELS Language Centers. ELS is a private company (with a separate application) but is located on UMSL's campus.

Students who graduate from ELS do not need to submit a TOEFL score for admission to UMSL. To apply for conditional admission through ELS, please follow the steps below.

  1. Apply to ELS Language Centers. Direct questions about ELS to their private offices.

  2. Apply for conditional admission at UMSL. Send your application form, transcripts, and a copy of your ELS acceptance letter to International Student & Scholar Services.

  3. If admitted, you will receive an I-20 from ELS and a conditional letter of admission from UMSL. Use these documents to obtain a student visa.

  4. Arrive in the United States and enroll at ELS. After graduating from Level 112, transfer to UMSL in August or January to begin your degree program.
