PROPOSED BA IN ENGLISH

 

English majors must complete at least 39, but no more than 45, hours in English exclusive of English 1100, Freshman Composition and English 3090, Writing About Literature. Students majoring in English must take:

 

1.  Survey Courses

 

2310, English Literature I

2320, English Literature II

2710, American Literature I

2720, American Literature II

Plus,

2280, Contemporary World in Literature or one of the following: 

2330, Introduction to Poetry

2340, Introduction to Drama

2350, Introduction to Fiction

 

           

2.  English 2810, Traditional Grammar. 

 

3.  English 3090, Writing About Literature

 

4.  Fifteen hours/five courses at the 4000 level.

(a)    Three of these courses must fulfill distribution requirements:  one course in American Literature, one course in British Literature before 1790, and one course in British Literature after 1790. 

(b)   A student may elect to pursue an emphasis area or areas by taking 3 courses at the 3000/4000 level within the areas described below.

(c)    Students may not use the same course to satisfy both a distribution requirement and an emphasis area.

(d)   Some courses (marked with an *) may be counted in more than one emphasis area (OR: “can count in one or another emphasis area”—I’m not 100% sure what this means anymore)

 

 

5.  Emphasis Areas.  By taking at least three courses at the 3000/4000-level, in any of the following six areas, students may qualify as having achieved an emphasis in that area. Required survey courses do not count toward the Emphasis Area.  Some courses may be cross-listed under different area headings and thus count toward more than one Emphasis Area; such courses are marked with an asterisk *.
