This document tells you how to download and install the Beta 3 release of the GNOME 2.0 desktop for the Solaris[tm] Operating Environment, SPARC[tm] Architecture Edition and x86 Architecture Edition. This document also provides pointers to FAQs that can help you to troubleshoot your installation, and provide information about known issues.
This section briefly describes the new features in the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop.
The GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop is a bug fix and performance improvement release.
The GNOME Ghostview application is not included in this release.
You can boost the performance and overall responsiveness of the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop by installing the mediaLib[tm] graphics acceleration library. The mediaLib library, if present, is used in GTK+ functions to speed up common graphics functions. The mediaLib library is available for the Solaris 8 Operating Environment or the Solaris 9 Operating Environment. The mediaLib library takes advantage of the VIS[tm] Instruction Set on UltraSparc[tm] machines for further speed improvement.
You can download the mediaLib library from the following location:
http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/mlibfiles.html
You can find information about mediaLib at the following location:
http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/mlib.html
You can find information about VIS in the following location:
http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/
You can use the following mediaLib libraries with the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop:
SUNWmlibl |
Full install: all mediaLib functions |
SUNWmlibi |
Partial install: mediaLib imaging functions only |
You can apply a variety of themes to window borders in the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop. To select a window border theme, open the Applications menu, then choose Desktop Preferences -> Theme.
The Install Wizard for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop installs the latest Xscreensaver onto your system. Before you can install the latest Xscreensaver, you must remove any previous versions of Xscreensaver. Uninstalling earlier versions of the GNOME desktop does not automatically remove previous versions of Xscreensaver. You can only install Xscreensaver with the Install Wizard. The Jumpstart script does not include Xscreensaver.
See Removing Earlier Versions of Xscreensaver.
Read this section before you download and install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop.
You must ensure that you have enough disk space for the /usr/gnome partition. You can use a loopback file system to install the /usr/gnome directory to a partition where there is more space. For example:
mount -F lofs /export/home/gnome /usr/gnome
You can download the following installers for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop, depending on your platform:
Installer with patches for the Solaris 8 Operating Environment, SPARC Architecture Edition
Installer with patches for the Solaris 9 Operating Environment, SPARC Architecture Edition
Installer with patches for the Solaris 8 Operating Environment, x86 Architecture Edition
After you unpack the installer, you install the desktop software using the Install Wizard, which is the graphical user interface for the installer.

The GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop runs on all hardware supported by the Solaris 8 Operating Environment (OE) or the Solaris 9 OE.
The GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop is an English version only.
You must have the following operating environments, disk space, and memory to install the desktop:
Operating Systems: |
|
Disk Space: |
The total free disk space that you require during the installation is the sum of the following for both the unpacked files in the download directory and the install image:
See Installer Contents, for the sizes of the various packages. For example:
Note: You can delete the files in the download directory after you successfully install the desktop in the install image directory. |
Disk Partition |
When you start the installation, Install Wizard warns you if you do not have enough space in the /usr/gnome directory. You need to make sure that you have enough disk space to create a disk partition. See Disk Partition for more information. |
Kernel Configuration: |
For the Solaris 8 OE, the number of shared memory segments must be at least 256, or 100 hexadecimal. If this parameter is not set, or is set to less than 256, then the Install Wizard notifies you during the installation that you must set this parameter. Perform the following steps to set this parameter:
set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg = 0x100
For more information about the system file, use the following command to view the relevant manpage: man -s4 system |
Memory: |
|
You must download the installer that is appropriate for your platform. See Installers for Different Platforms for more information. You download the installer as a single file.
Perform the following steps to download the installer for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop:
Perform the instructions in Before You Begin.
Ensure that you have enough disk space for the download and the installation, see System Requirements.
Decide which directory you want to download the installer into. Because you have to install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop as root, the download directory must be accessible by root.
View the following web page in your browser: http://www.sun.com/gnome/get.html
Click on the Download Now link for the required installer in the Download section of the page.
Log in if you are an existing download user, or go to the registration page if you are a new user.
Read the Terms of Use page, check Accept, then click Continue.
In the Download page, click on the description of the tarball that you want to download.
Download the tar file for the installer from the Sun Download Center to a root-accessible directory.
Perform the following steps to unpack the installer for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop:
Use the cd command to change into the directory where you downloaded the tar file for the installer.
Depending on your system platform, execute one of the following commands to unpack the installer:
SPARC Architecture Edition: |
gunzip -c gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris8-sparc.tar.gz | tar xvpf - gunzip -c gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris9-sparc.tar.gz | tar xvpf - |
x86 Architecture Edition: |
gunzip -c gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris8-x86.tar.gz | tar xvpf - |
When the installer is fully unpacked, you can remove the downloaded file to free up disk space using the following command:
SPARC Architecture Edition: |
rm gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris8-sparc.tar.gz rm gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris9-sparc.tar.gz |
x86 Architecture Edition: |
rm gnome-2_0-beta3-solaris8-x86.tar.gz |
You must remove any earlier versions of the GNOME 2.0 desktop that are on your system before you can install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop. To remove an earlier revision of the GNOME 2.0 desktop, perform the following actions:
Log in as root, then open a terminal window.
At the command prompt type the following command: cd <gnome-install-directory>/gnome-install
Where gnome-install-directory is the directory where you unpacked the installer for the GNOME 2.0 desktop.
Run the following command: ./remove
The Install Wizard for GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 installs Xscreensaver as part of the installation package only if there are no earlier versions of Xscreensaver on your system. Before you run the Install Wizard, you must run the following command to remove an earlier version of Xscreensaver: pkgrm SUNWxwsvr
Users of GNOME 2.0 can coexist with users of earlier versions of GNOME on the same system, for example GNOME 1.4. You cannot install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop on the same system as an earlier revision of the GNOME 2.0 desktop, for example the GNOME 2.0 Beta 1 desktop. You must remove earlier revisions of the GNOME 2.0 desktop before you install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop. See Before You Begin for more information.
