GNOME 2.0 Desktop for the Solaris[tm] Operating Environment

Beta 3 Release

This document tells you how to download and install the Beta 3 release of the GNOME 2.0 desktop for the Solaris[tm] Operating Environment, SPARC[tm] Architecture Edition and x86 Architecture Edition. This document also provides pointers to FAQs that can help you to troubleshoot your installation, and provide information about known issues.

What's New in the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 Release

This section briefly describes the new features in the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop.

General Quality

The GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop is a bug fix and performance improvement release.

GNOME Ghostview

The GNOME Ghostview application is not included in this release.

MediaLib Library

You can boost the performance and overall responsiveness of the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop by installing the mediaLib[tm] graphics acceleration library. The mediaLib library, if present, is used in GTK+ functions to speed up common graphics functions. The mediaLib library is available for the Solaris 8 Operating Environment or the Solaris 9 Operating Environment. The mediaLib library takes advantage of the VIS[tm] Instruction Set on UltraSparc[tm] machines for further speed improvement.

You can download the mediaLib library from the following location:

http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/mlibfiles.html

You can find information about mediaLib at the following location:

http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/mlib.html

You can find information about VIS in the following location:

http://www.sun.com/processors/vis/

You can use the following mediaLib libraries with the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop:

SUNWmlibl

Full install: all mediaLib functions

SUNWmlibi

Partial install: mediaLib imaging functions only

Window Border Themes

You can apply a variety of themes to window borders in the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop. To select a window border theme, open the Applications menu, then choose Desktop Preferences -> Theme.

Xscreensaver

The Install Wizard for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop installs the latest Xscreensaver onto your system. Before you can install the latest Xscreensaver, you must remove any previous versions of Xscreensaver. Uninstalling earlier versions of the GNOME desktop does not automatically remove previous versions of Xscreensaver. You can only install Xscreensaver with the Install Wizard. The Jumpstart script does not include Xscreensaver.

See Removing Earlier Versions of Xscreensaver.

Before You Begin

Read this section before you download and install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop.

Disk Partition

You must ensure that you have enough disk space for the /usr/gnome partition. You can use a loopback file system to install the /usr/gnome directory to a partition where there is more space. For example:

mount -F lofs /export/home/gnome /usr/gnome

Installers for Different Platforms

You can download the following installers for the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop, depending on your platform:

After you unpack the installer, you install the desktop software using the Install Wizard, which is the graphical user interface for the installer.

System Requirements

You must have the following operating environments, disk space, and memory to install the desktop:

Operating Systems:

  • Solaris 8 OE: SPARC Architecture Edition or x86 Architecture Edition

  • Solaris 9 OE: SPARC Architecture Edition

Disk Space:

The total free disk space that you require during the installation is the sum of the following for both the unpacked files in the download directory and the install image:

  • Desktop files.

  • Patches required by your system architecture.

  • Optional packages that you decide to install.

See Installer Contents, for the sizes of the various packages.

For example:

  • Total maximum free disk space required during installation for Solaris 8 SPARC Architecture Edition, with all optional packages: 300 MB for the unpacked files in the download directory, 300 MB for the install image. The total maximum free disk space for this example is therefore 600 MB.

Note:

You can delete the files in the download directory after you successfully install the desktop in the install image directory.

Disk Partition

When you start the installation, Install Wizard warns you if you do not have enough space in the /usr/gnome directory. You need to make sure that you have enough disk space to create a disk partition. See Disk Partition for more information.

Kernel Configuration:

For the Solaris 8 OE, the number of shared memory segments must be at least 256, or 100 hexadecimal. If this parameter is not set, or is set to less than 256, then the Install Wizard notifies you during the installation that you must set this parameter. Perform the following steps to set this parameter:

  1. Add the following line to the /etc/system file:

    set shmsys:shminfo_shmseg = 0x100

  1. Reboot your system.

For more information about the system file, use the following command to view the relevant manpage:

    man -s4 system

Memory:

  • 128 MB per user session.

  • 96 MB per user session for a Sun Ray configuration.

Installing the Desktop With the Install Wizard

Users of GNOME 2.0 can coexist with users of earlier versions of GNOME on the same system, for example GNOME 1.4. You cannot install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop on the same system as an earlier revision of the GNOME 2.0 desktop, for example the GNOME 2.0 Beta 1 desktop. You must remove earlier revisions of the GNOME 2.0 desktop before you install the GNOME 2.0 Beta 3 desktop. See Before You Begin for more information.

The Install Wizard provides the following types of installation:

Type of Installation
