Availability: We usually have one single tutor working in a subject area at a time. Tutors work one-on-one with students. If more than one student is present at the same time, the tutor will alternate between working with you and other students.
Preparation: We recommend bringing materials to your tutoring session that will help your tutor understand what’s happening in the class. Even if they’ve taken the class before, your class section is different, and you may have a different professor, so it will help if you can bring assignment sheets, notes you have taken, and your textbook. If you don’t have these things, don’t let that stop you from coming in. But we can help you the best if you are prepared. We’re happy to provide support.
Knowledge: Tutors have earned high grades in the subjects they tutor, and you can expect them to be knowledgeable about most introductory-level courses in a subject area. Keep in mind, though, that they have not been going to your class every day, so the first time you meet with them, it's normal that they may need to spend some time getting up to speed. If they haven’t taken the exact class you’re asking for support in (for example, because it's a higher-level class), they can support your learning by exploring and discussing the material together with you less as a tutor and more as a peer, and they may be able to guide you with study skills.
Appropriate service: Our tutors are paid employees, and they are students as well. They take classes, work other jobs, and have families of their own. You can help maintain a positive UTC by avoiding the following:
Thank you for helping us to keep UTC a comfortable and positive place to work and learn.
