Family Practice Concentration
Students wishing to work primarily with individuals and families will elect the Family Practice Specialization. Upon graduation, the new MSW will have the knowledge and skills to work in child welfare agencies, family service agencies, mental health clinics, healthcare organizations, family violence service agencies, substance abuse prevention and treatment programs, or correctional organizations.
A wealth of practicum sites throughout the St. Louis metropolitan area are available to provide experience in working with children, youth, and families before graduation.
Leadership and Social Change Concentration
The specialization in Leadership and Social Change (LSC) provides students with the knowledge and practical training to assume leadership and management positions in public and nonprofit organizations. Students learn how to acquire resources for current programs and new initiatives. They learn how to market and evaluate programs. Students learn how to advocate for clients and influence communities and policies. Students in LSC share a desire to lead organizations and communities that build the resources and capabilities of individuals and contribute to social justice.
Students in Leadership and Social Change are not required to have prior experience in leadership and management. Students who do not have social work practice experience will be encouraged to take coursework on practice with individuals, families, and groups, and they will also be encouraged to spend some time in a direct practice internship. The LSC specialization prepares social workers for local, state, and national organizations in a wide range of leadership and management positions. The focus is on social welfare, human services, health, mental health, social policy, community development, faith-based, and other community organizations.
