Amanda Bramley, GWP 2018 Liaison
Amanda is passionate about writing and about all of the ways to procrastinate putting all of those ideas down on paper. The Summer Institute left her feeling invigorated. She wishes that she left teaching every day with the same charge and inspiration that the Summer Institute provided. One of her goals is for her students to react to her lessons the way she reacted to the Summer Institute.

Caitlin Donnelly, GWP 2018 Teacher Consultant
Though I am originally from Long Island, NY, I spent two wonderful years teaching here in St. Louis at Mehlville High School. I look forward to taking all I learned at GWP with me to San Diego, CA, where I will teach for the 18-19 school year. I am grateful to the GWP for reigniting a desire to grow not only as a teacher, but also as a writer. I look forward to continued involvement in this supportive personal and professional community.

The Gateway Writing Project has reminded me of the rewards of writing and renewed my passoin to write. It has also equipped me with a better understanding of how to teach writing and instill a love for it in my students. The skillful capability of our instructors and professional expertise of fellow colleagues has provided a treasure trove of ideas, practices and resources for teaching writing. I would do it all over again.

I am passionate about stories. I believe that teaching students that every person has a story worth sharing while exposing them to diverse literature can make the world better. The Gateway Writing Project has reintroduced me to my love of writing and helped me reevaluate my teaching practices to best share that passion with my students.

John Ryan, GWP 2018 Teacher Consultant
I have been teaching for over 23 years, and I've considered myself a writer for longer than that, but the GWP institute has reminded me of the value of research into writing practice with the crucial support of my newfound colleagues in the project. I find that, even though it is not yet July, I'm already looking forward to the next school year.

Lisa Pavia-Higel, GWP 2018 Teacher Consultant
I have been teaching for the past ten years at the college level. I love working with students in this setting because of the impact we can have on our students who draw from such a variety of personal experience. I love what I do, but as a college educator, I don't have the background in Education that I might want. Not only did GWP help me learn specific tactics for helping students be more successful in the classroom, I found a welcoming group of educators who helped me grow as a teacher and a writer. I highly recommend GWP regardless of your academic discipline.

Mark Bratkowski, GWP 2018 Teacher Consultant
I began teaching at University City High School the year after I graduated from college. My interest in the Gateway Writing Project was kindled because of the excellent teachers in my department at U-City. I met my wife while at U-City, and I began teaching at Ursuline Academy after we got married. I am grateful for the Gateway Writing Project for shaping my beliefs and practices about teaching writing. I am also grateful for the community for the excellent teachers I met during the program, and the opportunity to reinvigorate my passion for creative writing.

Shalay Hudson, GWP 2018 Teacher Consultant
I am fascinated by learning about neurobiology, psychotherapy, trauma research, epigenetics, and building resilience. Digital Natives process information differently than those raised without access to the internet, and I am working to adapt to their needs. Social demands often take a great deal of our energy, and I feel that taking into consideration students' physical and social needs is paramount to helping them navigate the sea of information they wade in. Many students have to experience basic social safety before their prefrontal cortexes can engage meaningfully with academic information. I work really hard to walk that fine line between creating a space where students feel socially safe, but also feel challenged to stretch their abilities, and grow as thinkers, writers, and well-adjusted humans.
