2015 - 2016

Amy Summers

GWP 2016 Liaison

I am a second career teacher after years in journalism, marketing, and freelance writing. I became a teacher when my youngest child started school. I enjoy sharing my love of reading and writing while encouraging my students that we are all lifelong writers. GWP changed my teaching life as well as my life as a writer! I now include journal writing and reading every single class period. My students love the class and are growing more confident and excited about reading and writing.  In today's focus on STEM fields, I want to show freshness in English and instill that it is not all formulaic writing and stuffy out-of-touch literature. I have started a club at school to celebrate writers with writing prompts and sharing. Our sign-up was successful and I am excited to share writing with students who want to spend their free time creating!  When I began teaching, I neglected my own passion for writing. GWP helped me reignite it and remember I am a writer first. I plan on staying involved in GWP to keep me grounded in my love and remind me how I can inspire my students to find a passion, too!

Every student has words the world needs to hear. As a teacher of writing, I want each of my students to say confidently, "I am a writer." My time with the Gateway Writing Project showed me the importance of living the authentic life of a writer, which has lead to me being a more empathetic and responsive teacher of writing. Thanks to this unique experience, I can not only tell my students that I am a writer but also show it each and every day.

2016 Teacher Consultant

GWP gave me the confidence to teach writing the way I have always felt it should be. Good writers don't follow a formula or are constrained by a format. By embracing and teaching writing as an art rather than a science, I feel my students have surpassed expectations. They take more risks in their writing, and the results have been beautiful.

GWP allowed me to live as a writer; previously the teacher side of my personality took over. I am hoping for a balance of sorts, and I recommend this experience to all teachers.

Emily Hutti

   2016 Teacher Consultant

I am a middle school English Language Arts teacher. I participated in the summer institute after my second year teaching in 2016. At the summer institute, I focused my inquiry on the reader's/writer's notebook, which has been completely transformed my daily teaching practices. My students' work is organized and they are able to spend their free time working on their own writing even more. GWP was the refresher I needed in how to share my own love of writing with my students.

I'm a graduate student from UMSL. I received my undergrad in English magna cum laude with a minor in German in 2014. I also received my certificates from the Pierre Laclede Honors College, the technical writing certificate, and creative writing certificate in 2014. I graduated from UMSL with two Master's in English- one in Composition and Rhetoric and the other in Literature and Certificate in University Teaching in 2016. I'm currently attending UMSL for my MBA in marketing and a certificate in Social Media and Marketing with an expected graduation date in 2018. I'm hoping to receive my Certificate in Teaching College Writing by the end of the summer 2017. I have been Editor-in-Chief of The Current Student Newspaper for the max term of two years from 2015-2017. Before that I was Managing Editor and head copy editor for the paper. I was president of Sigma Tau Delta (International English Honors Society) from 2014-2017, only one year after the chapter was created on campus. I really enjoy writing and working with others on improving their writing skills. I believe that writing transcends the classroom and is used in all career fields after school.

The GWP enabled me to love teaching writing again. So much of my professional career has been centered around data and state testing, but the GWP allowed me to explore my passions in teaching writing again. This program also gave me the time and opportunity to research Standards-Based grading, which has become something I have tried to implement as part of my classroom teaching style.

Hannah Cunningham

GWP 2015 Teacher Consultant

GWP has changed my outlook on teaching and assessment. After my first pd with the group in 2012 after 12 years of teaching I was inspired and reinvigorated. It made me realize that unless we ask our students to write, how do we know what they really know. Anyone can get lucky on a multiple choice test. Only if you get your students to write about a topic do to you really know what your students really understand and be able to explain.
