CARES Act (HEERF Grant)
Using AmeriCorps award to pay for current educational fees
UMSL will certify AmeriCorps awards up to the amount of direct costs that you are being charged by the University. Students may request AmeriCorps funds to cover charges for the current semester. Once you have enrolled for an upcoming semester, you may request AmeriCorps funds for that semester as well.
When an AmeriCorps award is certified, the university receives the funds in two disbursements. AmeriCorps will pay one half of the award at the beginning of the semester and pay the other half at the semester mid-point. The Cashiers Office will count the mid-semester pending payment as anticipated aid against students' bills. If you owe the University more than your pending AmeriCorps payment, you will need to make payment arrangements with the Cashiers Office.
For more information about using your AmeriCorps benefit to pay for educational fees, please visit https://www.americorps.gov. To request your AmeriCorps funds for current direct costs, or inquire about how to use MyAmericorps, please contact AmeriCorps at 1-800-942-2677 or visit their website.
Using AmeriCorps awards to pay federal student loans
For information about applying your AmeriCorps award to previously borrowed federal student loans, please visit the AmeriCorps website. Students should be aware that when making this request, their actual lender may not appear in the list of lenders. This is because lenders (including Direct Loans) often use third-party organizations known as “servicers” for the administration (i.e. collection of payments, communication with borrower, etc.) of their loans. For example, when students go to the AmeriCorps web site and request that their AmeriCorps funds are applied to their previously borrowed loan(s), they may see one of the following servicers listed:
- FedLoan Servicing (PHEAA)
- Missouri Higher Education Loan Authority (MOHELA)
- Navient
- National Education Loan Network (Nelnet)
- Great Lakes
There are additional servicers that may be applicable. To determine your servicer(s), please visit the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS). You will need your FSA ID to access this system. This is the same FSA ID you use to sign your FAFSA. If you don't have your FSA ID you can request it on the FSA website.
For more information about using your AmeriCorps benefit to pay for federal student loans, please visit the AmeriCorps website. To request your AmeriCorps funds be applied to federal loans you have already borrowed, visit MyAmericorps. For questions regarding how to use MyAmericorps, please contact AmeriCorps at 1-800-942-2677 or visit their website.
