Welcome! The Ombuds Office is here for you!

The UMSL Ombuds Office is a safe place where all UMSL staff* are welcome to come and talk in confidence about any campus issue, problem, or dispute. Our office supplements, but does not replace, the University’s formal channels, such as the grievance policy.

The Ombuds Office offers an impartial, informal, independent, and confidential** place for employees to be heard, seek guidance and resources, and identify effective approaches to workplace issues and concerns.

*Students with concerns should contact the Division of Student Affairs (314) 516-5211, 218 Millennium Student Center). Faculty concerns should be directed to the Associate Provost of Faculty Affairs (314-516-5371, 426 Woods Hall).

**The Ombuds will not share any information without your permission. Exceptions to confidentiality may include Title IX & Equity issues and information about imminent harm to yourself or others. However, the Ombuds will provide options and resources in such cases.

The UMSL Ombuds:

Listens to employee concerns

Helps identify a range of options for the employee to address their concerns

Provides conflict coaching and resources

Provides informal resolution support (e.g. mediation, shuttle diplomacy, group facilitation)

Explains policies and processes

Identifies trends

Helps build individual and institutional capacity to address conflicts constructively

The UMSL Ombuds Does Not:

Make, modify, or enforce policy

Participate in any investigations

Make decisions about how to resolve conflicts

Act as an agent of notice

Keep written records of cases

Advocate for individuals, groups, or entities

Share confidential information with any parties

About the Ombuds

Dr. Marlo Goldstein Hode will serve as acting Ombuds for the 2022-2023 Academic Year. Dr. Hode brings more than 20 years of experience and education to this role including a doctorate in Organizational Communication, an LLM in Alternative Dispute Resolution from MU’s School of Law, as well as professional experience in mediation and conflict resolution. Additionally, she is a member of the International Ombuds Association and serves on their professional development committee.

She also brings over a decade of experience in diversity, equity, and inclusion to the work of serving as an Ombuds, as well as extensive experience working in different cultures.
