The Great Falls of the Missouri
The Great Falls of the Missouri.
8. Alfred Edward Mathews (1831-1874). The Great Falls of the Missouri. Tinted lithograph, Plate 24. Mathews, A.E. Pencil Sketches of Montana. New York: The Author, 1868. Archives & Rare Books Department, University Libraries, University of Cincinnati.
"The name Great Falls of the Missouri has been given to the cataracts collectively, although it is applied more particularly to the greatest one which is represented as a frontispiece…. This is the last of the series of cataracts, and is thirty-six miles above Fort Benton. The sketch was made from the left hand bank, which has rarely been visited by white men."
