This was my first time in South America and it couldn't have been spent in a better way. Dr. Godfrey Bourne was an incredible and highly knowledgeable individual who never hesitated to help me with any matter, regardless of the fact that I was the only student who did not have a science background. He was supportive in every way possible and I learned a lot from him. The students that participated in the program were wonderful, as well. Everyone got along great and meshed very well together. I made some life-long friends with this group and we have already begun hanging out, here, in the United States.
The CEIBA research center was a great experience. I enjoyed staying in the Ben Nab (hut-like structure where we slept) with pink-toed tarantulas crawling all around the ceilings. I overcame my arachnophobia by holding one for the first time. I saw and held various snakes and different insects. We had the opportunity to see the Giant Anteater and the very timid Giant Otters.
The Guyanese food that they introduced to us was very tasty. I loved the dish called, "Pepperpot." It was a stewed dish that consisted of beef, orange peels, cinnamon, garlic, thyme and onions. It was delicious. The eco-lodge in Karanambu was beautiful and relaxing. It was a great place to do the research I was doing because the Mud-Dauber wasp prefers to build its nests on or around building structures because they provide reliable shelter.
