Joe Southerland has been working in the Dr. Marcus Allen Advising Center since September 2010, and began advising pre-health students after working on academic alerts as a mentor for a year. As the Pre-Professional Advisor, Mr. Southerland has worked with faculty and staff in order to offer committee letters to students applying to professional healthcare programs, and has worked with local, state, and international professional schools to establish articulation agreements for a variety of healthcare programs. Recently, he began advising students interested in the UMSL Joint Engineering Program with Washington University and the UMSL College of Nursing.

Mr. Southerland has served on the Board of Directors for the Central Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (CAAHP) and on the Professional Development & Learning Committee for the National Association of Advisors for the Health Professions (NAAHP). He has also presented at several advising conferences on how advisors can have impactful career conversations with students.

A Triton Alumnus with two UMSL degrees, a B.A. in French (2010) and M.Ed. in Adult & Higher Education (2015), Mr. Southerland is proud to serve the students at the University of Missouri – St. Louis.
