The political science degree program provides students with the skills and knowledge to understand the theory and practice of politics and government both in the United States and abroad. The Department of Political Science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis offers broad coverage of the study of politics in the areas of American politics, urban politics, public law, comparative politics, international relations, public administration and policy and research methodology.
UMSL political science students study the presidency, legislative and judicial systems, political parties, interest groups and elections, political theory, city government and urban development, international organizations, conflict, war and other political processes.

Department faculty members recently have received distinctions such as Fulbright and National Science Foundation Grants and Governor’s Teaching Awards and have held important professional positions, including membership in the governing councils of the Midwest Political Science Association and International Studies Association. The faculty has published its research in more than 80 books and 400 articles in scholarly journals and has authored several texts used throughout the United States.
Political science majors at UMSL have unique advantages and programs to enhance their educational experience. Our internship program provides opportunities for students to learn first-hand about politics, government, law and nonprofit agencies in the St. Louis metropolitan area and in Washington D.C. Students also have exciting, life-changing opportunities to study abroad and work with faculty on research projects. UMSL also offers the Political Science Academy, a student organization that sponsors monthly meetings in a casual setting, bringing students and faculty together to discuss timely topics led by a guest speaker. PSA meetings are a wonderful chance to meet faculty and fellow students on a personal basis outside the classroom.
A political science degree from UMSL will enable and prepare you to be successful either in the job market or graduate studies. In our political science courses students develop communication and decision-making skills, research techniques, learn to analyze complex policy issues, both domestic and international in scope and have a thorough understanding of government and politics. Our graduates thrive in careers in business, education, public administration, journalism, public relations, nonprofit organizations and many other fields. A number of our graduates have even been elected to public office.
The Department of Political Science at UMSL offers a Minor in political science, BA in political science, BS in public policy and administration, 2+3 BA and MA in political science, MA in political science, PhD in political science and certificate in international studies, European studies, East Asian studies, Latin American studies, African studies, Women’s studies, or writing.
