Recreation and Wellness Center Membership Policies
Levels of Access – Age Restrictions
No membership required. Child must be directly supervised by a parent/guardian at all times and within 20 feet of a parent/guardian at all times (when using the pool, actually in the water within arm’s length unless child passes a swim test administered by a lifeguard). The only activity areas this age group is allowed to use are the pool, climbing center (top rope climbers must meet weight requirement for harnesses), and 2nd Floor Courts. Child must be closely monitored by their parent/guardian at all times (please see definition for direct supervision). Exceptions to these restrictions apply when children are enrolled in an instructional program or are part of a special rental or event.
Children in this age group are required to have a paid membership. This age group can use the following areas with direct supervision of parent/guardian – 2nd Floor Courts, Natatorium (excluding the Whirlpool), and climbing center (top rope climbers must meet weight requirement for harnesses). Exceptions to these restrictions apply when children are enrolled in an instructional program or are part of a special rental or event. While on the premises, all children must be directly supervised and within 20 feet of a parent/guardian at all times (when using the pool, actually in the water within arm’s length unless child passes a swim test administered by a lifeguard). * Please see definition for direct supervision.
These children must have a paid membership. They will be permitted into all areas of the facility, but must be directly supervised and within 20 feet of a parent/guardian at all times until they go through an orientation session where they will learn about proper and safe usage of equipment, etiquette, and acceptable behavior. After attending orientation, these members will be allowed in all areas of the facility without supervision, but parents must be in the building during the time the dependent is in the facility. Parents/guardians will not have to go through orientation with the child, but will be required to sign the orientation waiver after the dependent has completed it. This orientation form must be on file and the parent must be in the facility any time the dependent is.
A paid membership required for these individuals. They will be permitted into all areas of the center without supervision.
Defined as being in the same room no further than 20 feet apart and in direct line of sight of the child (within arm’s length if using the pool unless child passes a swim test administered by a lifeguard), and the Parent/guardian/adult over the age of 18 MUST be actively participating in the same activity as the dependent, i.e. playing basketball together, swimming together, etc. This does not mean the parent can be, for example, in a group exercise class while the dependent sits along the wall and watches.
Defined as a partner by traditional marriage, same sex marriage, and/or civil union/domestic partnership. A partner will need to establish eligibility by completing an affidavit of eligibility and providing verifying documents (i.e. marriage license or civil union certificate must be shown, or two recent documents showing a current shared address). All partners are attached to a primary member’s account and are billed through the primary member’s account. Partner accounts may not stand alone; a primary member must be active or freeze status in order for their eligibility to continue with the facility.
Dependents of primary members are eligible for a membership at the rates listed. Dependents are defined as age 6 – 22, having the same last name and/or living in the same household as the primary member. Children 5 and under will not be charged to access the facility, however an account must be created for each child before they can use the facility. Individuals over the age of 22 will not be considered a dependent and will have to purchase an individual membership according to their member category. Children under age 14 will have limited facility access but will be eligible for campus recreation programs at a discounted rate. A member will need to provide proof of dependency with either a birth certificate or photo id of dependent with the same last name. Dependents (except children 5 and under) will be issued a key tag in order to have access to the areas in the facility. All dependents are attached to a primary member’s account and are billed through the primary member’s account. Dependent accounts may not stand alone; a primary member must be active or freeze status in order for their eligibility to continue with the facility.
Defined as member and up to 5 related family members that all live in the same household, for a total of six people on the account. Each person will need to provide proof of relationship and residency to be eligible. A member is allowed to add more than 5 household members for an additional rate of $12/household member. Rates may vary for Instructional Programs based on the parent and/or dependent possessing a membership. See specific program information for details. Any dependent under the age of 5 will not have to pay for a membership but must be added to the account under the membership type “Under5.”
Guest passes will be available at a cost of $12 ($8 for UMSL Faculty/Staff and Students) for for sponsored community guests. A current member must accompany guests and a member may bring up to 3 guests per day. Guest are required to be 18 years of age or older to enter the facility, or must be accompanied by a legal guardian. Any guests 17 and under must have their guardian sign the facility waiver before using the RWC. Solicitation from community members will not be allowed. Guests will have access to the entire facility, but may not participate in any program that requires a membership. Guests must enter and exit with their sponsor member, provide a picture ID with proof of date of birth, and sign a release of liability form. The guest pass is good for one entry to the facility; guests may not exit the facility and re-enter at a later time.
When requesting to cancel a membership, a completed cancellation form must be submitted 30 days prior to the first day of the month in which you would like the membership terminated. Termination fees will apply if 30 days’ notice is not provided and no proration of membership contracts will occur for any cancellations. Some exceptions to the early termination clause will apply, including job loss, death, sudden illness, or moving 50 miles or more from RWC (documentation required).
Members that wish to freeze their membership should contact Membership Services. A freeze form, indicating the months for which the freeze is requested, must be submitted to the membership office 15 days prior to the desired start. The suspended membership will be reactivated and access can resume on the first of the month after the indicated freeze time. Membership must be maintained for at least three months before it can be frozen again. Members are allowed a maximum of 3 months for a freeze period, and are allowed a maximum of 2 freezes within a calendar year. Locker rentals will not freeze and refunds will not be granted for this period, however the prepaid membership term will be extended for the same amount of time as the freeze period.
A 12-month (annual) membership will be offered for all membership types to all interested members. The rate will equal the monthly rate multiplied by 12 months less a discount of 10%. The total amount must be paid up front to receive the 10% discount. This membership is non-refundable.
Nine Month Memberships
A 9-month membership will be offered for all membership types to all interested members. The rate will equal the monthly rate multiplied by 9 months less a discount of 5%. The total amount must be paid up front to receive the 5% discount. This membership is non-refundable.
Payment options include major credit cards, debit cards with the Visa or MasterCard logo, personal check, and cash. Payroll deduction is available for all full-time, benefits-eligible UMSL Employees. A fee will be charged for all returned checks or closed accounts. Members enrolled in open ended monthly billing must update credit cards via the online portal or mobile app and are subject to additional fees for declined or expired credit cards.
Campus Recreation will reserve the right to increase fees with 30 days’ notice to members. Prepaid annual memberships will not be affected by any increase until after the expiration date of the paid membership.
Member Disciplinary Policy
When a member violates a Campus Recreation or University policy, s/he is subject to disciplinary action. Examples of offenses include, but are not limited to: false use of identification, destruction of property, theft of property, trespassing, aiding or abetting, or verbal or physical harm inflicted upon an employee or member. Members are responsible for their children’s’ and/or guests’ conduct and any damage to or loss of property that may result from their guests’ actions. Disciplinary action may result in the loss of guest or membership privileges.
