With over 35 years of academic and professional experience, he has served as principal investigator and project director for many sponsored studies in corporate and governmental settings, and as a consultant to major corporations in the United States, Canada and abroad. His sponsored research program has included the development of statistical models for forecasting and risk management in financial institutions, the simulation of service operations for mass transit, the simulation of vessel traffic and lockage operations in the Upper Mississippi River navigation system, the development of computer-based systems for dispatching vehicles in mass transit systems, the construction of analytical models for distribution of petroleum products by pipelines and trucks, the creation of analytical models for manpower planning and scheduling in service operations, strategic planning for municipal information systems, the design of research methodology for testing the integrity of national credit-reporting databases, and survey research for organizations in the public and private sectors.
Douglas Smith is Professor of Management Science. He holds a Ph.D. in Management Sciences from the University of Minnesota (1972), an MBA from McMaster University, Canada (1968), and a BSc in Physics also from McMaster (1966). He teaches applied statistics, operations research, simulation for managerial decisions and international logistics. His research has emphasized the development of models and computer-based systems for the solution of managerial problems.
Smith’s articles appear in numerous journals including Decision Sciences, Journal of the Operational Research Society, Naval Research Logistics, Transportation Research, Journal of Transportation Management, European Journal of Operational Research, International Journal of Production Research, Computers and Operations Research, OMEGA, Information Systems and Operational Research (INFOR), Interfaces, MIS Quarterly, Journal of Management Information Systems, Information and Management, International Review of Retail Distribution and Consumer Research, American Review of Public Administration, Financial Management, Review of Quantitative Finance and Accounting, and Journal of Banking and Finance.
