THOUGHTS ON BA 156 FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Students enrolling in my BA 156 should be aware of some of the realities of this course (more specifically, this section of this course.) Nothing written here should be seen taken as an attempt to discourage anyone from enrolling in this section. However, I have found many students are oblivious to the rigors of this class; they tend to have little success in my section of BA 156.

Unfortunately, many of today's university students are products of school systems not known for academic rigor. Emphasis is on "feeling good" not on mastering course content with high standards. This section of BA 156 is not designed to make anyone feel good about himself or herself. The bar is set rather high, and those who do well can truly feel good about their performance. Excellence is rewarded; poor performance is not.

I employ a unique testing device, unlike anything you have probably encountered either in high school, junior college, or even in the university. It's basically a true/false approach turned into a multiple choice format. The grading scale rewards those students who choose the correct answer; those students who are more wrong than right lose points. It's a challenge, but that's what a university education should encompass.

Don't sign up for this course if you don't intend to come to class. Learning occurs in the classroom, and your presence is expected.

Students who have questions or concerns about taking my section are cordially invited to stop in at my office, 227 CCB, e-mail me at wayne.winter@umsl.edu, or call me at 314-516-6283. I welcome your inquiries.
