My experience in this course: The Adult Learner (AduEd 6410)

Thank you for taking a moment to complete the following survey questions. Please

respond with as much (or as little) detail as you wish. paul wilmarth

1.You had the choice to take this course as a regular face-to-face  course, or, as an online class; why did you choose (online / face-to-face)?

[I chose online because it gave the flexability I needed in a class. Being  a full time working mom with a husband and very active children in their

schools and community I needed flexability.]

[I chose online because I do not have time to travel on campus and enjoy the daily interaction at my own pace.]

[I really took the on-line course because it has more flexability.]

[This is my first class as a grad student. It has been over ten years  since I have taking a class for degree credit. I felt that I should first  try a more tradtional class.]

[I live in Cincinnati, Ohio so online was the only option.]

[I choice to do this course online because there is no such course offered  near my residence. As well as I like the online experience the flexibility  to learn at my own convenience.]

[It was much easier for me not to have to come to class, but to particpate  when it was convenient for me.]

[I only chose the on-line course because I have children at home. I often miss functions as a result of evening classes.]

[I choose face to face because this was my first graduate course and I  think I needed the interaction with other students.]

2.What were some of the challenges you faced in you efforts to complete this course of study?

[The number one challenge I faced was finding the time. I know I wanted a online course for more flexibility but by the end of a day I was exhausted

and sometimes too tired to get online and critically think.]

      [time management]

[having the time to complete the reading and post]

[New to the subject matter.]

[time - my work schedule was has been out of control.]

[I had a lot of work related issues which did pose a problem within this course.]

[I had difficulty keeping up with volume of discussion board postings. Initially I had difficulty accessing the documents because they were

 poorly labeled.]

[Initially, simply figuring out how to use the technology was difficult and annoying.]

[Overcoming the fear of public speaking, adjusting to a entirely new learning style for me.]

3.What worked best for you and your personal learning style during this course?

[What worked best for me in this course was having the information upfront. Knowing in advance when assignments and reading are due. I've take a few online courses but the ice breaker exercises really help to make a comfortable online experience.]

[I enjoy the option of self-directed learning.]

 [flexibility]

[This class taught me that I had a learning style, whice is visual. Advance notice of the reading and subject matter gave me a chance to study-up on the upcomming topics before discussed in class.]

[Leading the course discussion. I like to work in an interactive environment and leading the discussion kept me involved.]

[I like the professors input which guided the posting and that he allow persons to take turn leading discussions]

[The opportunity to reflect before posting worked well for me.]

[once I realized that I was responsible for my own learning it became a challenge to see if self-directed learning really worked for me.]

      4. What worked against you and your personal learning style during this course?

[What worked against my learning style was not having face to face contact.]

 [I cannot think of anything.]

 [To many posting to post]

[Being a visual learning. Some times in class, I would get an idea, but by the time that I got the floor, I would have forgotten how I was going to

 word it.]

[I am also visual learner so taking an online class is against my learning style.]

[I thought there would be more interaction with my fellow learners some colleagues seemed to disappear.]

[I am so busy it was difficult at times to keep up with reading and posting.]

[The multitude of meaningless responses. The amount of time I spent simply  reading through the responses was overwhelming. I learned nothing from at  least half of the postings. I often felt people posted comments simply to have posted... To me, the quantity of the postings was irrelevant. I was more concerned with reading something of quality. The discussion boards were full of chit-chat which took a lot of time to read and click through.  That became a major barrier over time.]

 [Resistance to change.]

5.What adult learning methods do you utilize when you approach a new  learning situation? Explain.

[The adult learning method I use a lot is the narrative learning style.]

[The learning contract is a new concept to me, but it helps to make goals, steps, and outcomes clear.]

 [life- experiences, and time management]

[I utilized a few adult learning methods but i think the one most applicable was context-based and situated learning]

[I like to read and ask lots of questions.]

[Now I employ the self directed learning. I decide what the objectives are for the course and use this learning method to achieve them.]

6.What did you gain from taking this course?

[I gained a lot of valuable information from online discussions that I can share in my approaches with working with adult students.]

[An overview of adult learning theories and a realization that there is not one golden strategy or theory that will fit every situation.]

[I learned a lot about the adult learner and the way they learn. The reading are great]

[Class helped to relef some of the fears that I had going back to school.]

[Theory...As adults we are involved in learning situations daily (e.g. transformational, informal or incidential). The important thing to keep in mind and the challenge is motivation. Adults have to be motivated if they are going to learn. Another important factor is the external forces that may impact the learning environment.]

[I got a greater appreciation for my learners and my own learning experience.]

[I learned lots and lots about adult learning theory.]

[The content was fabulous! I enjoyed the readings and actually learned a great deal about adult learners and the theory regarding adult education.

I have already utilized some of what I learned.]

[A totally new attitude toward learning and how to achieve a peace about it. I don't know how to explain it any other way but peaceful.]

7.Describe your own learning experience in this course.

[My learning experience in this course has been overwelmingly helpful. I have gained so much new information on approaches to take with adult

students and strategies that would help develop adult learner.]

[I enjoy developing my personal insights and applying them immediately to my persoanl and professional life.]

[I will never take a on-line coarse, this is not a coarse that a working person should enroll in.]

[I feel that I have a better understanding on the processes involed in adult learning. By expressing the subjects in the group, I felt I got a better understanding.]

[It was has been great. I currently work in a learning environment and spend lots of time looking for various ways to deliver instrustional

training. We don't do a very good job assessing the learning styles prior to our classes but we have to improve by mixing delivery methods up so our all learners will be engaged in the environment.]

[I learnt a lot and some strategies which i will bring into my instruction.]

[I enjoyed the opportunity to learn about adult learning.]

[Disorganized-------to have gained to self-knowledge and understandling about what I really want to do and realizing the control I have in

achieving this.]

8.How much time did you spend per week working on this course (for online students this would be logged in and or working on course assignments; for face-to-face students this would be in addition to in-class time)?

[I spent sometimes 5-6 hours a week reading material and reading discussions.]

[Per week online: 7 hours, plus additional time for research and reading the text and course documents.]

[not as much as I wanted to.]

[about 1-2 hours and more towards the end (with paper due).]

 [probably 5-6 hours a week.]

[A spend an average of 35 hours for week]

 [I don't know...2 hours or more...]

[I tried to spend at least three hours a week on-line, which is about the equivalent of what I would have spent in class. In addition, I spent time reading the material and completing the projects. The amount of time that took each week varied.]

[4 to 5 hours average]

9. Did you have any difficulty registering for this course and or accessing this course?

[I had no difficult registering for course or accessing it.]

 [No]

 [no]

 [No.]

 [no problems were encountered]

 [no problem at all]

 [No]

[I didn't have any difficulty registering or accessing.]

 [No]

10.Any other comments about your experience in this course?

[I have really enjoyed the course and I thank Dr. Henschke for creating a comfortable on line experience.]

[I appreciate the opportunity for online education.]

[There could have been utilization of the chat rooms for added interaction.]

[I enjoyed the high level of interactivity by the instructor.]

[What we gain in convenience, we lose in quality! I will participate in on-line courses in the future, but I do not expect to enjoy or gain as much as if I had attended a face-to-face course.]

 [Geat introductory, great instructor.]
