STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF MISSOURI-RESEARCH CENTER ST. LOUIS
UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS
Michael J. Mackowski of Gilbert, Arizona donated the Skylab Collection to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection in May 2008. The donor worked for McDonnell Douglas Aeronautics Corporation and collected the photographs during his tenure there which started in 1977.
Skylab was the United States’ first space station. The U.S. launched it in response to the Soviet’s Salyut I space station launched in 1971, as the world’s first orbital laboratory. McDonnell Douglas Aeronautics Corporation of St. Louis, MO, was employed as the primary contractor on the project. Skylab entered orbit in 1973 and crashed back into the atmosphere in 1979. Three crews manned the station. Skylab provided useful information about the Sun, human adaptation to prolonged exposure to microgravity, and from scientific and medical experiments conducted by astronauts.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection contains 459 color and black & white photographs. Also included are technical and informational books/publications. The photographs are primarily focused on Skylab’s Airlock Module and Multiple Docking Adapter (MDA). The folders are divided into two series: 1) Photographs and 2) Books, Pamphlets, and Publications.
