Gerhardt Kramer and Joe G. Harms formed the Kramer and Harms Architecture firm in St. Louis in 1956. Gerhardt Kramer was born in New Orleans on October 26, 1909. He received a Bachelors of Architecture from Tulane University in 1930 and his Masters of Architecture from Cornell University in 1932. He spent his early years working on several historical preservation projects in the French Quarter of New Orleans. He restored a number of historic homes and buildings before he joined the U.S. Navy in April 1942. He served in the Pacific during World War II and moved to St. Louis upon his return from active duty. He designed and built a home for him and his wife on 243 East Jefferson St. Upon moving to St. Louis, he joined the architecture firm of Hugo K. Graf, and took over the practice when Graf died in 1953. Kramer ran the firm for the next three years as Gerhardt Kramer Associates until incorporating with Joe Harms in 1956.
Joe G. Harms was born in Keytesville, Missouri on November 23, 1909. He received his Bachelor of Architecture from the Carnegie Institute of Technology. He began his career working for the Missouri State Highway Department. Like Kramer, he served in the Navy during World War II. He served as an architect of ship repair in the Charleston Navy Yard in South Carolina. After he ended his Naval service in 1946 he worked as part of the Maguolo and Quick Architecture firm, and also did some work independently before joining Kramer in 1956.
Kramer and Harms worked on restoring several historic buildings in the St. Louis area including the Eugene Field House and the Chatillon-DeMenil House. They also worked on the historic village at Faust Park, the Thomas Sappington House and the Palm House in Tower Grove Park. Kramer retired from the firm in the early 1990s, and lived in St. Louis with his family until his death on December 4, 2001.
