Jim Boyer, business agent for the Amalgamated Clothing and Textile Workers Union in St. Louis, donated ACTWU's records to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-St. Louis, in increments from November 30 to December 16, 1987. Additional records were donated by James Sullentrup in April 1989.

The Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America helped transform American labor from the sweatshop conditions of the poor immigrant workers to America at the turn of the 20th century into a social work force with improved wages, working environments, a 40 hour work week and life-long protections for health care and retirement of workers. It helped create the Congress of Industrial Organizations and merged together the Textile Workers Union of America; the International Ladies' Garment Workers Union; the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union; and the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America. The joined unions today exist under the name UNITE HERE and represent a quarter of a million workers.

The collection includes negotiated agreements with clothing industry manufacturers in St. Louis and the surrounding regions from the 1930s to the 1980s, primarily with the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA). It also has organizing literature and strike materials, particularly from the most active organizing period in the 1940s, plus correspondence from union officers, activists and rank-and-file members, including labor grievances and organizing reports, newsclippings, newsletters and other union publications. The collection has an alphabetical arrangement and a separate photograph series, 19xx-19xx, following the folders.

The following timeline reflects important dates in the history of ACTWU. Published histories of the union appear in box 94.

1824 formation of United Garment Workers

1901 United Textile Workers of America (TWUA) formed as an affiliate of the American Federation of Labor

1907; 1909 worker strikes in New York declared illegal by United Garment Workers

1910 women workers in Chicago walked out to protest wage cut at Hart, Schaffner & Marx pants shop; led to 30,000 clothing workers going on strike that lasted 4 months, ended with creation of one of the earliest arbitration systems in US; labor leaders like Sidney Hillman emerged from this. Hillman became first ACWA president.

1912 Workers in New York struck against employers and UGW and won small improvements in working conditions

10/12/14 UGW refused to seat New York delegates at its Nashville convention, only to Chicago delegate veterans of the 1910 strike. That group left the convention, met with the New York group, and declared themselves the legislative body for clothing workers, choosing Hillman as president

12/26/14 special convention in New York forms ACTWA- "Amalgamated" to unite craft rivalries and "A" for "America" (Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America) ; not allowed to join American Federation of Labor; led many strikes-often involving police brutality--against employers, UGW and IWW

1915 struck against Leopold Morse Company, settled the next year; strike also in Montreal ; strikes and lock outs in New York

1916 ACTWA organized 75% of workers in the Baltimore clothing markets

1917 helped establish the 48 hour work week in New York and Chicago; first general strike in Montreal; in Toronto ACWA establishes the first 44 hour work week in North America

1919 strikes against Michaels Sterns & Co. in Rochester led to a court injunction and damages suit against ACTWA ; a lawsuit ended in dismissal of the damages suit but upheld the injunction, but the case figured prominently in the Norris-LaGuardia Anti-Injunction of Act a decade later.

1920 six month walk-out of over 60,000 clothing workers; ACWA established agencies to feed the strikers; settled in the spring of the following year with concession to union and arbitration process

1923 establishment of Amalgamated Unemployment Insurance Fund, providing unemployment benefits for clothing workers, continued through the establishment of social security in 1938; opened labor banks in Chicago and New York

1925 strike against International Tailoring Company in Chicago and New York lasting 19 weeks and ending in the firm establishment of ACWA as union

1929 Philadelphia market organized; thereafter, sweatshop conditions were replaced better working conditions, higher wages and the establishment of arbitration procedures

1933 clothing code of the National Recovery Act established, leading to bargaining procedures between union and a newly formed national manufacturers association; ACWA members in the men and boy's clothing industry did not strike again until 1974

1933 ACWA admission into the American Federation of Labor (AFL)

1934 efforts begun to organize cotton garment industry in rural towns; strike in Elizabethville, PA marred by police violence that killed one person but ended successfully for union, and organizing effort expanded throughout the cotton garment industry; UTW also organized strikes of textile workers in the north

1935 ACWA helps form the Committee for Industrial Organization (CIO) within the AFL; after the AFL/CIO split, ACWA played an active role in bringing the groups back together in 1955

1936 Journeyman Tailors Union merges with ACWA; Haloid Company of Rochester, later called Xerox, joins ACWA

1937 half million dollar fund established to organize textile workers; CIO forms Textile Workers Organizing Committee (TWOC) as an alternative to UTW

1938 establishment of the Fair Labor Standards Act

1939 TWOC and UTW merge to form Textile Workers Union of America

1943 CIO establishes Political Action Committee, makes Sidney Hillman first chairman

1944 Amalgamated Life Insurance Company incorporated in New York

1945 establishment of retirement fund in men's clothing industry

1946 Hillman Foundation established by ACWA, giving awards in communications that further his social vision

1947 Taft-Hartley Act enacted, restricting activities of labor unions

1948 Union label drive

1949 Minimum wage raised from 40 cents to 75 cents an hour; Truman signs bill and gives token pen to ACWA president Jacob Potofsky

1950s ACWA sets up four medical centers for workers: Sidney Hillman Health Center and Amlgamated laundry Workers Health Center in New York; Sidney Hillman medical Center of the Male Apparel Industry in Philadelphia; and the Sidney Hillman Health Center in Chicago.

1955 AFL-CIO merger

1956 California Manufacturing Company shop steward Ora Lee Malone organized the St. Louis workers to join ACWA; union's first African American business representative

Mid-1960s - began awarding scholarships

1970 Chicago Joint Board establishes worker day-care center

1971 trade agreements setting voluntary quota limits on man-made and wooden apparel and textiles from Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan result from ACWA anti-import activism

1972 General President Jacob S. Potofsky and General Secretary-Treasurer Frank Rosenbloom retire; replaced by Murray H. Finley and Jacob Sheinkman

3/73 establishment of Social Service Department for off-the-job activities

1973-1974 organization of workers of Farah Manufacturing, largest pants makers in the world, after 21 month strike and boycott

1976 merges with Textile Workers Union of America to become ACTWU

1995 merged with International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union to create the union called UNITE

2004 merged with Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees (HERE) to form UNITE HERE
