The St. Louis Branch of the American Association of University Women derives its origin from two main groups. The earliest of these was the American Association of Collegiate Alumnae, which established a branch in St. Louis in 1898. In 1919, the AACA changed its corporate name to the American Association of University Women from the College Club of St. Louis, a local group. Within two years the AACA changed its name to AAUW, and the two St. Louis groups united into one organization, and inherited the name of “The College Club of St. Louis Branch of the American Association of University Women.” In May 1956, the name was changed to the “American Association of University Women, St. Louis Branch”.
As a branch of the AAUW, the present organization is also an affiliate of the International Federation of University Women founded in 1919 at an international meeting of university women sponsored by the British and American associations.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The American Association of University Women Records is divided into three series. In series one the AAUW’s records contains awards, board minutes, books, budgets and charter board of freeholders, folders 1-14; the records are organized alphabetically. Series two contains correspondence, newsletters, and nomination awards in alphabetical order, folders 12-22. Series three contains pamphlets, poetry, AAUW reports and St. Louis Public School reports, arranged alphabetically, folders 24-35.
