Elizabeth Gentry Sayad was the first Missourian to receive both the Missouri Arts Award (1991) and the Missouri Humanities Award (2004). She was Co-Chairman of the National Louisiana Purchase Bi-Centennial Committee in 2004 with Chancellor Emeritus Blanche Touhill of the University of Missouri- St. Louis. They presented the Three Flags Festival, a national "Signature Event" commemorating the transfer of Upper Louisiana in its capitol of St. Louis. Mrs. Sayad is Chairman Emeritus of Les Amis (The Friends), a French Colonial Heritage preservationist group she founded in 1994. In 2005, she completed a seven-year term as Commissioner of the St. Louis Art Museum.

Elizabeth Sayad was a founding member of the Missouri Arts Council and of the St. Louis Arts and Humanities Commission, now the Regional Arts Commission. She chaired the grand openings of Powell Symphony Hall, the Loretto Hilton Theater, Washington University's Edison Theater, and the Mississippi River Festival at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. She was Missouri's representative on the Gala Opening of the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC.

Mrs. Sayad received Washington University's "Distinguished Alumna Award" in 2000. Following her chairmanship of the 1976 Bicentennial Horizons of American Music and the Performing Arts (BHAM), Senator John Warner presented her with the American Revolutionary Bicentennial Commission's "Distinguished Service Award." Mayor Moon Landrieu made her "Honorary Citizen of New Orleans," St. Louis Mayor John Poelker gave her the "Key to St. Louis," the St. Louis Argus proclaimed her the "First Lady of Culture," and the St. Louis Globe-Democrat hailed her as a "Woman of Achievement."

Mrs. Sayad was the founding president of the New Music Circle. As president of the Alliance Francaise, she brought the first annual meeting of the Federation of Alliances Francaises to St. Louis. She was president of the St. Louis Women's Club from 2001- 2003, during its centennial year.

Two of Mrs. Sayad's books have been published. A Yankee in Creole Country: The Unfinished Vision of Justus Post (Virginia Publishing, 2004) is an annotated collections of letters describing the early 19th century character of St. Louis by the man who founded Chesterfield, Missouri, in 1817. A Scarlet Thread: A Collection of Articles on the Arts and Culture (Patrice Press, 1991) includes previously published articles by Mrs. Sayad in the Christian Science Monitor, Kansas City Star, St. Louis Magazine, Washington University Magazine, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, and other publications. They cover the relationship between regional and international arts activities in the 1960s through the 1980s. An additional series of articles discusses Persian culture before the 1979 revolution.

Elizabeth Sayad is a graduate of the John Burroughs School in St. Louis, has a Master's in Music from Northwestern University and a Master of Arts degree in American Culture Studies from Washington University, where she received her BA degree. A sixth-generation Missourian, she descends from a long line of early Virginia planters who came to the St. Louis region in 1795 on a Spanish land grant.

This collection contains seven series, including personal documents, organizations that Elizabeth Sayad was involved with, and photographs.
