The Edward A. Langleben Postcard Collection was donated by Anne R. Langleben on August 27, 1990.
Edward A. Langleben was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1915. He graduated from the St. Louis public schools and received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Missouri. Langleben worked as an aeronautical engineer for the Emerson Electric Company in St. Louis from 1940 until 1963. He then moved to Detroit, Michigan to work for L.T.V. for the next three years. In 1966, Langleben moved to Dayton, Ohio where he was employed at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base until his retirement in 1988.
Langleben held an honorary fellowship in the Society of Aeronautical Engineers. He also volunteered for the Boy Scouts of America, the Air Force Museum, and served as chairman for a Red Cross drive in St. Louis. His hobbies included softball and golf. Toward the end of his life, Langleben began to collect old postcards of places in St. Louis that he remembered. He died in 1990.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Edward A. Langleben Postcard Collection consisted of 245 postcards collected by Langleben during his life. The postcards focus on St. Louis area places and buildings. The postcards are divided into the following themes: Admiral excursion boat, aerial views, bridges, buildings, churches, city hall, entrances to private buildings, Forest Park, Gateway Arch, government buildings, hospitals, hotels, Jefferson Barracks, Jefferson Memorial, Jewel Box, Municipal Opera, parks, St. Louis Art Museum, St. Louis Zoo, schools and universities, Shaw’s Garden, Union Station, water works, and various.
