Dorothy Mahon donated the records of the Greater St. Louis Federal Business Association to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on August 26, 1988.
The Greater St. Louis Federal Business Association was founded in 1927. The national group began after a presidential order creating the Federal Coordination Service in July 1921, transferred to the Procurement Division of the Treasury department in July 1933, and to the General Services Administration in July 1950.
The Federal Business Association dates from 1927, with a formal constitution adopted on February 17, 1931. Other cities established local FBAs earlier but many of them did not meet during World War II. The St. Louis group had an uninterrupted history. Its purpose was to coordinate efforts by various Federal agencies to exchange ideas about the efficiency of routine work methods, to loan equipment and share surplus furniture.
The group also conducted site tours of its member offices and hosted luncheon meetings. In November 1961, President John F. Kennedy created a board of Federal executives in each administrative region of the Civil Service Commission. The FBA was directed to report to this new level of federal bureaucracy on a quarterly basis.
