The St. Louis Area Division of Missouri Association for Social Welfare (MASW) Papers were donated by Washington University’s archives assistant Jay Kempen on July 26, 2002. The papers were originally donated to Washington University by Muriel Pumphreys.
MASW was organized in 1901 as the Missouri Conference of Charities and Corrections by Charles A. Ellwood for the purpose of protecting and advancing the health and welfare of all citizens of Missouri. It accomplished these objectives through research, conferences, social planning, community organization, and cooperation with public and private agencies. In 1915, the name was changed to Missouri Conference of Social Welfare. The current name was adopted in 1934.
