The records of the St. Louis chapter of Clergy and Laity Concerned (CALC) were donated by Mary Ann McGivern on September 6, 1994.
The CALC was founded in 1965 by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and other religious leaders to oppose United States intervention in Vietnam. Today, CALC’s agenda focuses on disarmaments, economic justice, human rights, and racial justice.
In the early 1970s, the St. Louis Catholics for Peace with Justice elected to become a chapter of CALC to join the national effort in resisting the Indo-China War. After the United States withdrew from Vietnam, the St. Louis chapter of CALC joined the successful campaign to halt the construction of the B-1 Bomber. By this time, they had broadened its membership to include people from a variety of religious faiths and ethical commitments.
In the late 1970’s the St. Louis chapter of CALC directed their attention to resisting the spread of militarism. They chose to protest the General Dynamics Corporation’s Trident submarine, capable of destroying 408 cities, each with an explosive capacity five times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Its world headquarters were once located at the Pierre Laclede building in Clayton, Missouri.
The St. Louis chapter of the Clergy and Laity Concerned folded on December 31, 1988.
