The Dolly Darigo Papers were donated by Dolly Darigo on July 7, 1994.
Darigo began work as a bacteriologist for the U. S. Army and later for Missouri Baptist Hospital. Later, Darigo worked as a naturalist for the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. In the 1980s, she worked and lived at Meramec State Park where she gave tours and developed natural history programs. Darigo also led natural history tours for disabled visitors at Babler State Park. Darigo and her husband, Carl, have conducted botanical surveys of Meramec and Babler State Parks. Since the early 1980s, they have collected and identified specimens for the state herbarium in Jefferson City.
Darigo has also spent many years volunteering for the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, where she serves on committees to establish care, housing, and employment for the mentally disabled and to improve race relations in the churches. Also, Darigo has volunteered in the Africa and Madagascar Department at the Missouri Botanical Gardens Research sorting incoming specimens by plant family.
Darigo has been involved in a series of causes including United Farm Workers Union, Freedom of Residence, Namibia, penal reform, and machinists unions.
Darigo is also the mother of three children and grandmother of four.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Dolly Darigo Papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, flyers, newsletters, and photographs. Together they chronicle the interests of Dolly Darigo from 1949-1994.
This collection is divided into ten series: (1) Correspondence, (2) Publications, (3) Government Reports, (4) Reform Movements, and (5) Greater Saint Louis Committee for Freedom of Residence, (6) International Association of Machinist, (7) Machinists Non-Partisan Political League, (8) National Farm Worker Ministry, (9) United Farm Workers, and (10) Photographs.
SERIES DESCRIPTION
SERIES 1 - CORRESPONDENCE
This series contains Dolly Darigo’s correspondence from 1957-1991. Also, included are a number of contact lists. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 2 – PUBLICATIONS
This series includes newspaper clippings and photocopies from 1955-1994. Also, included are the Farm Labor Organizing Committee Boycott Update newsletter from 1985-1986, the Namibia newsletter from 1989-1990, and the Record of Proceedings of the Federated Trade Council in Milwaukee newsletter from 1956-1958. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 3 - GOVERNMENT REPORTS
This series includes the directories of the U. S. Congress from 1952-1960, a series of Missouri House Bills concerning crime and punishment from 1972-1973, a copy of the case United States of America vs. John K. Briggs, copies of the Congressional Record from 1954-1971, the 1966 Annual Report of St. Louis County Commission on Human Relations, a series of Department of Labor reports from 1956-1971, and a statement made by St. Louis County Supervisor Lawrence K. Roos in 1967. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 4 - REFORM MOVEMENTS
This series includes information on various reform movements including unemployment, draft protest, farm workers, Milwaukee Labor Council, penal reform, and the University City Civic Association. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 5 - GREATER SAINT LOUIS COMMITTEE FOR FREEDOM OF RESIDENCE
This series includes correspondence from 1965-1966; pamphlets and brochures from 1968; financial, statistical, and budget reports from 1964-1967; Greater Saint Louis Committee for Freedom of Residence newsletter from 1965; and Ruth C. Porter memorial material from 1967. Arranged chronologically.
