The Myra Himelhoch papers were donated her daughter Jean Shaffer on October 1, 2002.
Myra Samuels Himelhoch married Jerome Himelhoch in 1939. They produced three daughters: Jean Shaffer, Katherine Ng, and Susan Ezeokobe. Myra was a doctorial candidate in history at Washington University in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Her interests included American diplomatic history. She died in 1977. Jerome was a professor emeritus of sociology at the University of Missouri – St. Louis. He died on July 19, 2001 after suffering an apparent heart attack.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Myra Himelhoch Papers includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, lawsuits, a Senate bill, fiction writings, research notes, and academic writings. Together they chronicle the interests of Myra Himelhoch from 1926-1975.
This collection is divided into five series: (1) Correspondence, (2) Newspaper Clippings, (3) Scrapbooks, (4) Lawsuits and Legal Issues, and (5) Writings and Research.
SERIES DESCRIPTION
SERIES 1 – CORRESPONDENCE, FOLDER 1
This series contains fifteen photocopied letters from Jerome Himelhoch to Myra Himelhoch from May 13, 1945-June 5, 1945 during his basic training at Fort Dix, New Jersey and Camp Crowder, Missouri. These letters describe his induction and processing into military life and his observations of attitudes and customs in the military. This series also includes one letter recommending books from Mark and Judy Miller to Myra Himelhoch from September 9, 1975. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 2 – NEWSPAPER CLIPPINGS, FOLDER 2
This series seven contains original or photocopied newspaper articles on St. Louis from 1961-1972. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 3 – SCRAPBOOKS, FOLDERS 3-4
This series contains two scrapbooks: the Legal Aid Society Scrapbook and the Mental Health Scrapbook. The Legal Aid Society Scrapbook includes newspaper and periodicals from 1965-1970. Topics includes St. Louis County Supervisor Lawrence K. Roos decision to not provide funding for the Legal Aid Society in 1970 and the decision to offer representation to militants. The Mental Health Scrapbook includes newspaper and periodicals from 1973-1975. Topics include the Fulton State Hospital, the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry, lobotomy, and sterilization. Arranged chronologically.
SERIES 4 – LAWSUITS AND LEGAL ISSUES, FOLDERS 5-9
This series includes four lawsuits and a U.S. Senate bill proposal. Bartholomew vs. Beal involves a petition to have a commitment to a mental hospital null and void and to have all records expunged. Bergin vs. McFarland involves real estate matter. Miller vs. Washington University School of Medicine involves student access to official records. Aiken vs. Clary involves medical malpractice. Senate Bill No. 882 involves confidentiality and accuracy of information regarding the mental health of individuals. Arranged alphabetically.
SERIES 5 – WRITINGS AND RESEARCH, FOLDERS 10-29
This series includes writings and research on the topics of antimasonic ideology; analysis of the social-economic structure of Kinloch, Missouri; fictional works; care of the insane in St. Louis and Missouri; Frederick Douglass’ appointment as ambassador to Haiti; poor relief legislation and administration in Missouri; Ira Allen and the Olive Branch; Mark Miller’s attempt to apply for medical disability; race and housing in Milwaukee; the Rorschach test; and the St. Louis gubernatorial election of 1888. Also included are a series of transparencies including the predicted independent and irregular voters in the St. Louis General Election of 1888; St. Louis Democratic wards in 1884-85; St. Louis Democratic wards in 1888; wards ranking highest in native, black-ethnic, and second generation ethnic population; saloon map of St. Louis about 1888; and population of St. Louis African American by ward in 1888.
