The St. Charles Countians Against Hazardous Waste (SCCAHW) collection was donated by chief founder and Executive Director Meredith Hunter on February 15, 1996.
SCCAHW, a grass-roots environmental group, was founded in 1982 to protest a government plan to ship more radioactive waste to Weldon Springs, Missouri to store. Some 2,000 citizens protested the idea, halted the dumping, and eventually convinced the government to clean up hazardous waste at Weldon Springs.
The Weldon Springs Site is located approximately 30 miles west of St. Louis. The Department of the Army operated the Weldon Springs Ordnance Works for the production of TNT and DNT from 1941-1944, leaving behind DNT/TNT contamination. In 1955, the property was transferred to the Atomic Energy Commission (Department of Energy) for the production of uranium feed material. The uranium feed material was produced by the Mallinckrodt Chemical Corporation from 1957-1966. Radioactive sludge residues resulting from the processing were placed in four on-site pits. Other radioactive wastes, including the entire contents of the Destrahan Street Facility, operated by Mallinckrodt, were stored at the Weldon Springs Site by the AEC. In 1967, the Army partially decontaminated the plant in order to produce Agent Orange. The project was canceled in 1969, prior to becoming operational.
In 1987, the Weldon Springs Site designated as a Superfund Site.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The SCCAHW/Weldon Springs collection includes financial information, correspondence, meeting minutes/agenda, environmental reports, newspaper clippings and photocopies, newsletters, brochures and pamphlets, and photographs, Together they chronicle the establishment and activities of SCCAHW from 1982-1996. The records document SCCAHW’s mission to promote public awareness and lobby for the cleanup of Weldon Springs hazardous waste. The records also reveal the larger picture of the power of a grass-roots organization.
The collection is divided into seven series: (1) Administration, (2) Correspondence, (3) Membership, (4) Publications, (5) Reports, (6) Workshops, and (7) Photographs.
