The Joseph Piatchek papers were donated to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection-St. Louis by Rose Feurer in October 1991.
Joseph Piatchek was an employee of St. Louis Cordage Mills in St. Louis, Missouri from the late 1930s until the 1950s. While at Cordage Mills, he was active in Local 695 of the Textile Workers Union of American (TWUA), attending a convention in Atlantic City, New Jersey and chairing an education committee meeting in St. Louis in 1949. He was part of the bargaining team representing Local 695 during its strike against Cordage Mills in 1952.
In the late 1950s, Piatchek worked in real estate and became vice-president and sales manager of the Hayward Realty Co. in St. Louis. He later served on the Board of Directors of the Real Estate Salesmen's Association of South St. Louis. He was also a member of the United States Citizens Defense Corps during World War II.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Piatchek papers are arranged in two series: Publications, Certificates, Correspondence and Invitations 1937-1976; and Photographs. The bulk of the publications are newspapers of the TWUA.
SERIES DESCRIPTION
SERIES 1 - PUBLICATIONS, CERTIFICATES, CORRESPONDENCE AND INVITATIONS 1937-1976, FOLDERS 1-4
The publications are mostly TWUA newspapers featuring articles about Joseph Piatchek chairing a St. Louis education committee conference in 1949 and attending a TWUA seminar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison also that same year. Certificates are from his attendance at the same TWUA seminar as well as one in 1947. He also received certificates for his civil defense activities during the war. The correspondence includes letters of congratulations from TWUA national officials for the successful settlement of the 1952 strike against Cordage Mills.

The photographs depict various events Joseph Piatchek's life mostly centered on company and union activities.
