Mr. Alfred J. Ford donated his research papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on July 29, 1999.

Mr. Ford has been a community leader. He has owned several businesses, and has served on major community boards in St. Louis. Mr. Ford and his brother Lafayette formed the firm of Ford Brothers Insurance Brokers as associates of General Insurers, Inc. On November 1, 1970, Mr. Ford joined the insurance firm of Lawton-Byrne-Bruner as Vice President. On January 1, 1987, Lawton-Byrne-Bruner merged with international brokerage firm of Marsh & McLennan, Inc. Mr. Ford served as Vice President of Marsh & McLennan until his retirement on November 1, 1989.

Mr. Ford has served on the Chairman of the Presidents Council of St. Louis University; Vice Chairman of the Board of the United Way of Greater St. Louis; Board of Directors of the Regional Commerce and Growth Association; and the Advisory Board, City Region, Boatman's National Bank.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection documents Mr. Alfred J. Ford's career as a civic leader. It includes pamphlets, programs, meeting minutes of businesses, boards, and organizations to which he belonged.
