Mrs. Anita L. Bond donated her research papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri-St. Louis on June 18, 1991.
Mrs. Bond has been a community leader, civil rights, and champion for education. She is a past president of the St. Louis Board of Education, elected in 1974. Mrs. Bond served in many offices at the St. Louis Board of Education until her retirement in 1979.
Mrs. Bond has been involved in the study and search for solutions to the problems of equality in public education. She became involved in the Citizens Advisory Committee, for School Desegregation for the St. Louis Board of Education in 1964, and began participation in the Community Resources Committee in conjunction with the selection process of Washington University professors in 1967. She also maintained membership in the Community Conference on St. Louis Public Schools; co-sponsored by the Danforth Foundation in 1969; belonged to President Lyndon B. Johnson's Conference on Equal Educational Opportunity in 1968; and held a ten-year membership on the Missouri Citizens Advisory Committee to the United States Civil Rights Commission as a delegate.
Mrs. Bond has lectured on the topic of Black Studies at St. Louis University, Fontbonne College, Maryville College, and many other community groups and institutions. She has been affiliated with St. Louis City Plan Commission; Health and Welfare Council Human Development Corporation; National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); National Support Committee of Y.W.C.A.; Panel of American Women; Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority; Jack and Jill of American, Inc.; National Black Parents Organization; St. Louis Zoo Commission; Education Commission National Coalition; and she worked as a consultant to the Washington Office of Head Start.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
This collection documents Mrs. Anita L. Bond's educational career, her political involvement on a local and national level, and her presidential appointment to the Missouri Citizens Advisory Committee to the United States Civil Rights Commission. It also documents Mrs. Bond's speeches, writings, correspondence, news clippings, pamphlets, her involvement and service on St. Louis' community boards and organizations.
