The papers of Robert Hyland were donated to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection by his daughter, Molly Hyland Wight, on June 26, 1997.

Robert Hyland's career in broadcasting grew from a sales job at CBS in Chicago to serving as the general manager for KMOX radio, the CBS affiliate in St. Louis. In 1973, CBS appointed him as a senior regional vice president. At KMOX and CBS, Hyland helped develop the radio call-in show "At Your Service" and the off-air "Call For Action" volunteer services, as well as other public service aspects of broadcasting.

Hyland grew up on Lindell Boulevard. He attended Barrat Hall, a private Catholic boys' school. He graduated from St. Louis University High School in 1936, and thereafter attended St. Louis University. His father, Robert F. Hyland, was a prominent surgeon who did pioneering work in sports medicine.

Hyland served as chairman of the board for St. Louis RCGA; Downtown St. Louis, Lindenwood College Board; Regional Medical Center; Municipal Theater Association; the Jefferson National Expansion Memorial; and St. Anthony's Medical Center (he founded the Hyland center for the treatment of alcoholism and drub abuse with St. Anthony's). He also served as president of Missouri Broadcasters Association; St. Louis Zoological Commission. Hyland also was a member of Civic Progress.

Robert Hyland died on March 5, 1992.
