The Henry Tobais Brewers and Maltsters Union #6 Collection was purchased from the estate of Henry Tobias in September 1999.
Brewers and Maltsters Local #6 is the oldest labor union in continuous operation in the city of St. Louis. The large numbers of Germans who emigrated to St. Louis in the years prior to the Civil War became the Beer Barons and the men who worked for them. Formed in 1886 the local originally held a charter in the Knights of Labor and in 1887 they got a charter with the American Federation of Labor (AFL). The union records for this early period are in German with very little translation. As the brewing industry grew so did the union. St. Louis with Lemp and Anheuser-Busch and scores of smaller breweries St. Louis was one of the early centers for beer production in the United States.
The United Brewery Workers and the AFL competed for the many other workmen connected to the brewing industry. The United Brewery Workers were industrial unionism. One union would represent everyone in the Brewery. The AFL wanted separate unions for he various trades, ie coopers, engineers, firemen and teamsters. In 1906, under pressure from these trades, the AFL revoked the United Brewery Workers charter. Severe criticism across a wide spectrum of the labor movement forced the AFL to reinstate them and give them control of all jobs affiliated with the brewing industry. This conflict between industrial unionism and trade unionism continued to be a problem within the breweries. The delivery drivers joined the Teamsters Union several years before the rest of the brewery workers.
The collection documents the changes that the union underwent over the years as well as the everyday details of a labor union.
The collection also contains material that Henry Tobias collected on the history of brewing and St. Louis breweries. There is also a series dealing with the arts. Tobias and his wife were involved with the Light Opera Guild. Included are materials from the Dancing Masters of America and the Dancing Teacher's Association of St. Louis.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection consists of three major areas brewing history, Brewers and Maltsters Union No. 6, and the arts. The brewery history material consists of newspaper articles, books and handwritten notes. It's emphasis is on St. Louis breweries. The Union records document the union's changes over time, from its origins and affiliation with the Knights of Labor, to its absorption by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters. The arts material comes from three organizations, the Light Opera Guild of St. Louis, the Dancing Masters of America, and the St. Louis Dancing Teachers' Association. The Union material, which is the bulk of the collection, is divided into sub-series.
