Doris Wheeler graduated from Washington University with a degree in botany. She got her masters in plant physiology from Radcliffe. She served as Regional Educational Director for the International Ladies Garment Workers Union from 1935 to 1971. After her retirement she got involved with the Reform Organization of Welfare. She and Maurice were also involved in the Compton Heights Neighborhood Association and Democratic politics.
Maurice was bom in Japan and came to the United States when he was 15. He moved to St. Louis and helped to organize the Socialist Party in 1941. Wheeler ran for Governor of Missouri on the Socialist ticket in 1952.
Maurice served on the St. Louis Planning Conunission from 1960-1967 as a representative of the labor movement. He was the first chairman of the Eighth Ward Independent Democrats. He was a design draftsman at Barry-Wehmiller Machinery Co. for 30 years. He retired in 1971. In retirement he served for 15 years as a fundraiser for the Reform Organization of Welfare. He was a member of the Compton Heights board of directors from 1986-1988. Wheeler was an organizer for the American Federation of Teachers and a founder of Local 23 of the American Federation of Technical Engineers.
Both Maurice and Doris were involved with co-ops during the late 1940's and early 1950's.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection reflects the membership of these two social activists in the Reform
Organization of Welfare, the American Federation of Technical Engineers, the Eighth Ward
Independent Democrats, the New Democratic Coalition, the Compton Heights
Neighborhood Association, the Socialist Party and the Cooperative movement. The
collection includes correspondence, newsletters, publications, minutes and reports. It is
divided into series for each organization.

SERIES 1: Personal
This series contains the personal information in the collection. It includes
correspondence, grade cards, poetry written by Maurice Wheeler, information on his
mother's estate resumes and address books. It is arranged alphabetically.
SERIES 2: Subject Files
This series reflects the Wheeler's varied interests in a wide range of organizations and
subjects. These files are arranged alphabetically.
SERIES 3: Calendars
Appointment calendars arranged chronologically.
SERIES 4: Reform Organization of Welfare (ROWEL)
Tlis series contains correspondence, agendas, minutes, reports and other material
related to the Wheeler's work in welfare reform. Arranged alphabetically and chronologically.
