Julian Rammelkamp's widow Mabel donated his correspondence, biographical and dissertation material, books, newsclippings and note card files on November 15, 1995. She donated additional microfilm rolls on January 24, 1997.
Julian Rammelkamp was born on August 4, 1917 in Jacksonville, Illinois. He graduated from Jacksonville High School. He recieved an A.B. degree from Illinois College in 1939. At college, Rammelkanp served as the editor of the student newspaper, The Rambler. He aslo served as freshman class president, student marshall and a member of Sigma Pi Society.
Rammelkamp did graduate work from 1939 to 1941 at Brown University before serving four years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone. After leaving the service he returned to graduate study at Harvard University and received an MA in 1947. He taught at Harvard for three years. Rammelkamp received a Ph.D. in history from Harvard in 1961.
During the 1950s Rammelkamp worked as both a history teacher at Jacksonville High School and as a reporter for the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. He became a history professor at Albion College in 1954. He chaired the history department from 1975 to 1983 and was the college's pre-law adviser through most of his tenure. He retired from Albion in 1984. An endowed scholarship fund was established in his name at Albion following his retirement.
Dr. Rammelkamp was an expert on American journalism history and published widely on the topic. journals that have included work by Dr. Rammelkamp include Rhode Island History, the Missouri Historical Society Bulletin, the Dictionary of American Biography and the Encyclopedia of American Biography. Rammelkamp's book, Pulitzer's Post-Dispatch: 1878-1883, was published by Princeton University Press in 1967, and received critical acclaim.
Dr. Rammelkamp died on August 24, 1994 in Michigan.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
Boxes of handwritten notes indexing every issue of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, used by Dr. Rammelkamp for researching the history of the newspaper, comprise the bulk of the collection, boxes 1-57. These boxes are stored at the Records Center in Columbia, MO. The rest of the collection consists of Rammelkamp's correspondence; magazines and newsletters collected on the history of the Post-Dispatch; research newsclippings; photographs; a package of oversized newspaper reproductions and six boxes of rare books on the history of St. Louis and the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

of index cards are stored in each Records Center-size box. The final two Records Center boxes
include index card file notes Rammelkamp took on the Joseph Pulitzer II papers and materials
