Julian Rammelkamp's widow Mabel donated his correspondence, biographical and dissertation material, books, newsclippings and note card files on November 15, 1995. She donated additional microfilm rolls on January 24, 1997.

Julian Rammelkamp was born on August 4, 1917 in Jacksonville, Illinois. He graduated from Jacksonville High School. He received an A.B. degree from Illinois College in 1939. At college, Rammelkanp served as the editor of the student newspaper, The Rambler. He also served as freshman class president, student marshal and a member of Sigma Pi Society.

Rammelkamp did graduate work from 1939 to 1941 at Brown University before serving four years in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He spent two years in the Panama Canal Zone. After leaving the service he returned to graduate study at Harvard University and received an MA in 1947. He taught at Harvard for three years. Rammelkamp received a Ph.D. in history from Harvard in 1961.

During the 1950s Rammelkamp worked as both a history teacher at Jacksonville High School and as a reporter for the Jacksonville Journal-Courier. He became a history professor at Albion College in 1954. He chaired the history department from 1975 to 1983 and was the college's pre-law adviser through most of his tenure. He retired from Albion in 1984. An endowed scholarship fund was established in his name at Albion following his retirement.

Dr. Rammelkamp was an expert on American journalism history and published widely on the topic. Journals that have included work by Dr. Rammelkamp include Rhode Island History, the Missouri Historical Society Bulletin, the Dictionary of American Biography and the Encyclopedia of American Biography. Rammelkamp's book, Pulitzer's Post-Dispatch: 1878-1883, was published by Princeton University Press in 1967, and received critical acclaim.

Dr. Rammelkamp died on August 24, 1994, in Michigan.
