DeVerne Calloway donated this addenda to the collection of her papers (SL 12) at the Western Historical Manuscript Collection in St. Louis on June 1, 1992.

Ms. Calloway was born in Memphis, Tennessee. She attended LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis and did graduate work at Atlanta University and Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. She taught school in Georgia and Mississippi before joining the American Red Cross and traveled to China, Burma and India during World War II. While in India, she led a protest against the segregation of Negro soldiers in the use of Red Cross facilities. Calloway moved to Chicago after the war and helped form the Committee for Racial Equality (CORE) in 1946. She later joined the staff of the Jewish Welfare Fund and developed skills in fund raising. In 1948, she married Ernest Calloway, a political activist and union organizer. Ernest Calloway later became president of the St. Louis NAACP, research director of Teamster's Joint Council #3 and a professor of Urban Affairs at St. Louis University (see SL 11, SL 540 and SL 550). In February 1961 they began publishing Citizen Crusader, later named New Citizen, a newspaper covering black politics and civil rights in St. Louis.

Calloway was elected to the Missouri House of Representatives on her first bid for public office in November 1962. She was the first black woman elected to the Missouri Legislature. She served on the House committees on education, public health and safety, and social security. She also served on the elections Committee and the Accounts Committee, as chairman of the Federal-State Relations Committee, as chairman of the State Institutions and Properties Committee, and as secretary of the legislature's Democratic caucus. During her career in the legislature, she worked actively to increase state aid to public education and to improve welfare grants and services for dependent children, the blind, disabled and elderly.

In 1978, she served on the education committee that presided over the transfer of administrative control of Harris-Stowe teachers' College from the St. Louis Board of Education to the state. Calloway also served on many community boards, including the board of the Union-Sarah Economic Development Corporation, an organization incorporated to improve the economic, educational and social opportunities in the North St. Louis area.

Calloway was elected to her tenth term in the Missouri House in November 1980. She retired from public office at the conclusion of that term. Ms. Calloway died at age 76 at the home of her sister, Evelyn Iles, in Memphis, Tennessee, of an apparent heart attack.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

This addenda adds a great deal to the original collection of DeVerne Calloway's papers (SL 12). In addition to containing more autobiographical material, including educational records from grade school to college, the addenda has a large subject file that Ms. Calloway collected on topics, causes, organizations and people. It also includes family letters, primarily between Ms. Calloway, her mother and her sister (additional correspondence between DevErne Calloway and her mother appears in the series 5 scrapbooks, volumes 2 and 3), and correspondence with inmates in the Missouri prison system that Ms. Calloway maintained as part of her work investigating poor prison conditions on the House State Institutions and Properties Committee. The addenda also contains five personal scrapbooks and three scrapbooks of local political newspapers and publications, including copies of New Citizen and campaign newspapers from campaigns in the 4th, 18th and 26th Wards. The scrapbooks appear after the addenda's photographs series, which documents all facets of Ms. Calloway's life, and include photographs of her work with the American Red Cross in India and Burma from 1944 to 1947. Oversize material documenting local political campaigns and the 1976 presidential campaign of Jimmy Carter appears at the end of the collection, followed by a collection of books and magazines kept by Ms. Calloway. The oversize material and the books and magazines series have not been microfilmed.
