s0232 League of Women Voters of Missouri
s0233 League of Women Voters of Kirkwood and South St. Louis
s0234 St. Louis Metropolitan League of Women Voters
s0248 Metropolitan Area League Of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters of St. Louis was donated by Julie Hasl on August 15, 1985, it was assigned accession number 2712. Processing was completed by Zelli Fischetti on July 16, 1992.

In March 1919 the Golden Jubilee convention of the National American Women Suffrage Association met in St. Louis. Carrie Chapman Catt, speaking to the gathering, urged "Arise women voters... let the nation hear you pledge all that you have and all that you are to a new crusade... a crusade that shall not end until the electorate of the Republic is intelligent, clean, American". Before the convention was over the National League of Women Voters was formed. The St. Louis chapter was officially formed in November of that year, and in May 1920 the St. Louis chapter opened the first citizenship training school. July 1920 was a milestone for women in Missouri as the 19th amendment was ratified. Given the power of the vote the members of the League took an interest in every aspect of local, state and national government. The stated goal of the organization was to educate the voter, while remaining non-partisan as far as candidates were concerned and to support issues which the majority of the membership approved. One of the first campaigns the St. Louis League tackled was corruption in the city government, especially the court system. The League continues with the same goals and basic structure today.

SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection contains a wide variety of materials including publications, correspondence, newsclippings, artifacts, photographs, films, tapes and records. In processing the records the original categorization used by the League was maintained. One of the most interesting aspects of the collection revolves around the Leagues habit of collecting information on both sides of a issue even if the material was unflattering to the organization or its position. In addition to records relating to the St. Louis area, the collection also contains a series on the Missouri League of Women Voters and the National League of Women Voters. These series contain communications between the St. Louis League and the state and national offices. It should be noted that information on a given subject may be found in several different series, thus an extensive index has been included. The photographs are included in the Western Historical Manuscript Collection photo database.

SERIES DESCRIPTION
GENERAL NOTE: The collection has been organized as much as possible in the order in which the organization maintained it, thus correspondence, pamphlets, newsletters and other material will exist in almost every folder relating to a particular subject. The series will also be found to have overlapping subject files, for instance information on low income housing might appear in Metro Problems, Housing, City Redevelopment and Government in Operation. The collection has been extensively indexed and this should alleviate any problems of information crossover.
