Steven Wallace, assistant professor of Gerontology at the University of Missouri -St. Louis, donated tapes and transcripts from the Minority Aging Project to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection on June 22, 1988, September 29, 1988 and in April of 1990.
From 1987 to 1990 Assistant Professor Wallace assigned students from his Sociology 470 class to interview elderly relatives or acquaintances from areas in and around St. Louis. All of the individuals interviewed for the project were African Americans. Students tape-recorded the interviews and either transcribed the tape or provided a summary. Topics discussed included racial discrimination, the Depression, the civil rights movement, family life and working conditions.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The Minority Aging Project Collection, 1987-1990, includes microcassettes, cassettes, transcripts and summaries produced by Sociology 470 students for Assistant Professor Steve Wallace from 1987 to 1990. Tapes were made for each interview but not all were transcribed. Summaries were written by the students in lieu of transcribing. Oral history consent forms for each interviewee are included in the folder containing the tape and transcript/summary for that interviewee.
