St. Louis Women Historians was founded in 1981 to provide a local forum for women historians. Members are encouraged to present their research and projects, both formally and informally.
Every year members hold a conference to commemorate National Women's History Month. In 1983 the conference was on the "History of St. Louis Women, 1900-1920." The 1984 conference highlighted "St. Louis Women in World War II." "Technology and Women's Domestic Role" was the theme of the 1985 conference. "St. Louis Women and the Labor Movement" was the theme of the 1986 conference. The 1987 conference was "And She Generally Decides: Mississippi Valley Creole Women in the 18th Century." The theme of the 1988 conference was "From Suffrage to the Smoke Filled Room."
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The St. Louis Women Historians records consist predominantly of information concerning their yearly conferences, 1983-1988. This information includes publicity information, MCH proposals, correspondence, financial records, and evaluations. It does not, however, include transcripts of the discussions or speeches. This collection also includes mailing lists, conference attendance lists, and photographs of some of the exhibits used in the conferences.
Information concerning National Women's History Month can also be found here. A copy of the Mayor's proclamation of National Women's History Month for 1986 is part of the collection. Correspondence with Margaret Hickey is also included.
The information on the planning of each conference is fairly extensive. Information on the group's other activities, however, is scarce in this collection.
