Dorothy Stade and Roger W. Hershey contributed additional records on March 24, 1983. Addenda to the collection were received on September 15, 1983 from Chuck Hamaker; January 9, 1984 from Les Harmon; November 8,1984 and April 11, 1985 from Dorothy Stade; July 1, 1986 from Ed Schmidt, October 6, 1986; from Susan Pletsher; and May 28, 1987 from Dorothy Stade.

The Ozark Chapter of the Sierra Club began in December, 1971, when the Missouri group of the Great Lakes Chapter grew to a sufficient size to achieve chapter status with the national group. The national Sierra Club is the largest wilderness conservation group in the United States, publishing educational and scientific studies on environmental issues and lobbying for conservation legislation. Chapter groups support the activities of the national Sierra Club, initiate their own campaigns for local conservation issues, and organize member outings to area wilderness sites.

The Ozark Chapter includes all regional subgroups in the Missouri and Arkansas areas. The chapter joined other conservation groups in opposing the Aiken-Talmadge Wild Areas Bill and providing conservationist input on other government wilderness, energy, urban environment and conservation projects and legislation. In particular, the chapter supported legislative attempts to include the Irish wilderness and Hercules Glades wilderness areas, Bell Mountain, Rockpile mountain, Paddy Creek, Piney Creek, and the Mingo Wildlife Refuge as part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. It also opposed the construction of the Lock and Dam 26 replacement and led efforts to oppose construction of a proposed dam on the Meramec River. The chapter also provided information and conservationist perspectives to various water projects along the Missouri River. Group members wrote letters to legislators, organized petition and letter-writing campaigns, collected statements and news releases, gave public testimony and distributed information to the public on all these issues. the chapter also collected information on Stockton Dam, The Upper and Lower Buffalo Wilderness areas and the Upper Mississippi River Basin.

Supported by a grant from the Office of Education (Department of Health, Education and Welfare), the chapter conducted a series of workshops in 1974 on the development and use of nuclear power. A booklet entitled, " The Benefits, Problems and Environmental Impact of Nuclear Power", was published by the chapter for use at these workshops. The group also published a bimonthly newsletter, originally titled The Clarion, later renamed Ozark Sierran, for its members. the chapter's energy committee printed a newsletter for its members from 1975-1976. The Ozark Chapter also teamed with conservationists in Alaska in 1978 to support legislation designed to preserve Alaskan wilderness areas.

The chapter also collected the public statements and news releases of the Great River Resources Management Study (GREAT III), a project of the Army Corp of Engineers designed to develop a plan utilizing Mississippi River resources in a variety of ways. The chapter provided Sierra Club Representation to the study's public meetings and workshops.

In 1978, the Forest Service of the United States Department of Agriculture undertook its second roadless area review and evaluation (RARE II) to determine which wilderness areas in the nation should be included in the National Wilderness Preservation System. The Ozark Chapter Of the Sierra Club offered testimony and correspondence to assure fair evaluation of Missouri's ten inventoried wilderness areas. When the Forest Service's evaluations were found unsatisfactory, chapter members urged legislators to initiate appeals.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The Sierra Club, Ozark Chapter records include some meeting minutes of the Missouri group of the Great Lakes Chapter from 1969 to 1971, with some organizational material published by the national group dating from 1966. The bulk of the collection includes correspondence, meeting minutes, manuscripts, literature and testimony generated from the chapter's St.Louis office with some correspondence , meeting minutes and literature from the Kansas City office singled out in separate folders. Meeting minutes include those of the board of directors, the executive committee and the conservation committee. Some correspondence is duplicated under subject heading.

By contract stipulation, non-archival material was returned to the Sierra Club. Much of this material included Sierra Club Council memoranda from the national group to regional council members. Returned material also included board of directors, minutes and memoranda from the national group, government publications, source material and newspaper clippings. As an example of the source material kept on hand by the chapter, folders 50-51, "Energy Support Material, 1974 and Energy Support Material, 1975-1979", were retained.

The material listed in the subject file under "Nuclear Power" includes HEW grant forms for the chapter's nuclear power educational project. The RARE II material contains correspondence from the Missouri Wilderness Coalition, a group based in Columbia, Missouri to which the Ozark Chapter of the Sierra Club belonged. The GREAT III material consists primarily of memoranda and correspondence from the Army Corp of Engineers.

The collection is divided into seven series: (1) Organizational Records; (2) Subject Files; (3) Great III Material; (4) RARE II material; (5) Addendum processed in February 1982; (6) Addendum processed in March 1990; and (7) Slide presentation.
