The Records of the Young Women's Christian Association of Metropolitan St.Louis were donated by the organization in December, 1978 and an addenda in September, 1979

The Young Women's Christian Association got its start in England at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution in 1865 as an effort to provide for the spiritual welfare of girls who worked in the factories. The American organization got its start in 1866 when a Boston missionary, Mrs. Lucretia Boyd organized benevolent ladies to aid employed girls and women. The St.Louis group was conceived when multitudes of young girls flooded the city during the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in hopes of finding employment. The St. Louis group affiliated with the national organization in 1907.

The YWCA in St.Louis has had an important role in the lives of young women through the years and has expanded its scope to include many other social aspects of life in the city. During WWI it established Hostess Houses at army barracks, planned soldiers night parties, sponsored Red Cross classes and raised money for the war ravaged of Europe. These activities led to a later affiliation with the USO.

The depression once again brought hundreds of young women to the city in search of employment. The YWCA offered job training programs, employment services, counseling and temporary housing to these young women many were penniless when they arrived and would have been forced into prostitution to survive. The St. Louis YWCA later became involved in other social issues such as racial equality, the Vietnam war and fair housing.

The YWCA in St.Louis established several summer camps for girls in Missouri and Illinois. The YWCA also established residences for women and cafeterias which served the public and employed many of the organization's young charges.

The role of women has changed dramatically during the 20th century and the YWCA has remained flexible enough to change at the same pace. With Headquarters located at 1015 Locust, in 1990 the YWCA still offered recreational programs and an educational curriculum.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The YWCA collection covers the organization's activities from its inception in 1904 to the late 1970s. The constitution and bylaws along with revisions and complete financial records are included. The St.Louis YWCA was divided into several branches, including a segregated club for black girls and each of these groups is represented in the records which include documentation on programs, summer camps and clubs maintained by the various branches. The collection also includes a record of programs for which the YWCA shared responsibility with similar organization's, such as the USO, American Red Cross and the YMCA.

The various groups within the YWCA kept scrapbooks of newsclippings, which have been microfilmed. The collection also includes 566 photographs, ranging from unidentified snapshots to portraits of the organization's leaders and supporters. The history of the local as well as the national and international YWCA is well documented within the collection it includes several published manuscripts as well as many shorter histories of the local chapters.

The YWCA papers offer information on many of the important issues which faced St. Louis, the nation and the world during this century. Suffrage, child care, race relations and the Vietnam war are some of the issues on which the collection contains information.
