The Metropolitan Area League of Women Voters Collection is a combination of eight donations. Agnes Garino in January, 1978; Elaine Blodgett in May, 1981 and April, 1991 ; Brenda Banjak in November, 1982, February, 1983 and February, 1986; Julie Hasl in August, 1985, and the League office in July, 1987.
The League of Women Voters evolved out of the Women's Suffrage League after the passage of the 19th amendment. In the early days of the organization groups were established in many of the suburban areas of St. Louis as well as the city. Recently these groups have been brought together as the Metropolitan League of Women Voters. The mission of the League is to educate the voter, while remaining non-partisan as far as candidates are concerned and to support issues which the majority of the members approve. The various community leagues concentrate on issues in there areas, while all are involved in national and state issues such as voter registration.
SCOPE AND CONTENT
The collection contains a wide variety of material including publications, correspondence,
newsclippings, photographs and microfiche. The collection deals with issues on the local,
state and national level. The environment, finances, the judicial system, housing and human
rights to name a few. Every attempt was made to keep the collection in its original organization.
folder labels are, in most cases, those assigned by the organization. Some materials were received without folders or description, and these have been organized, as much as possible, to those organizational precedents of the rest of the collection.
