The papers of the St. Louis Metropolitan League of Women Voters were donated to the University of Missouri-St. Louis, Archives and Manuscripts Division, Women's Historical
Collections, by Janet Becker, President, in January 1976.
The St. Louis Metropolitan League is an inter-League organization whose membership consists of all members of recognized local leagues of St. Louis and St. Louis County. According to its by-laws, the purpose of the Metropolitan League is "to implement county and metropolitan program as chosen by its membership, to insure a sound financial base, and to coordinate other League work including state and national items where feasible."
In 1976 the St. Louis Metropolitan League of Women Voters became the new name of the Metropolitan Council Leagues of Women Voters of St. Louis and St. Louis County. The Metropolitan Council was created in 1966 to supersede the St. Louis County-City Committee, an inter-League committee organized in 1954.
The collection contains correspondence, financial records, reports, publications, and newspaper clippings dating from 1936. Also included are reports, data, and resource materials for studies of metropolitan issues conducted by the League during this period. Cooperative projects with other organizations are also part of the collection.
The collection is separated into three series: Administration, Program and Cooperative Projects.
