Mrs. Julian C. Hall (Mickey), president of the League of Women Voters of Missouri, donated the League of Women Voters of Missouri papers to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection in August 1975.

The collection contains correspondence, photographs, publications, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, and memorabilia dating from the League's creation in 1919-20. In addition, the papers (minutes, treasurer's reports, and publications) of the Missouri Equal Suffrage Association, for the years 1911-1919, are included.

The Missouri Equal Suffrage Association organized in February 1911, was a member of the National American Women's Suffrage Association and precursor of the League of Women Voters of Missouri. Historically, St. Louis was the birthplace of the League of Women Voters. In March 1919, the National American Women's Suffrage Association held its Jubilee Convention in St. Louis. At this convention, Carrie Chapman Catt, President of the organization, called for the members to "raise up a League of Women Voters." The delegates agreed but formal organization was delayed until February 1920. The Missouri League of Women Voters came into formal existence in October 1919 and thus predated the National League by several months.

According to official literature, the League of Women Voters is a "non-partisan volunteer organization dedicated to promoting political responsibility through informed and active participation of citizens in government."
