The Center for Metropolitan Studies donated the UM-St. Louis Black History Project Collection to the Western Historical Manuscript Collection at the University of Missouri St. Louis on September 30, 1985.

Irene Cortinovis, associate director of WHMC St. Louis, received funding from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission and the Monsanto Company in February 1980 for a one year project entitled "Sources of Black History in St. Louis City and County." The project identified and collected records, correspondence, photographs and publications documenting the history of blacks in St. Louis. It surveyed historical source materials held by black organizations and individuals and acquired or copied these collections for retention at WHMC St. Louis. It also taped interviews with black St. Louisans who played significant roles in the history and development of the city and county.

In addition to cost sharing funds provided for administration, the project employed two research assistants: Ina Neal Watson, who previously had taught American History and Black Studies at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park, and Isaac Darden, a political science graduate from Washington University.

During its first year the Black History Project surveyed over ninety organizations and individuals and contacted 350 potential donors, establishing collection priorities that reflected the wide range of black experiences in St. Louis history. An advisory group of community leaders and educators helped to develop these priorities, which included size and importance of the organization, influential or representative individuals, and the availability and quality of the records.

The historical materials collected or copied by the project cover a wide span of years and many different aspects of local black history. These include the papers of sociologist Herman Dreer, 1916 1978, and educator Julia Davis, 1863, 1980; scrapbooks from the black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha, 1930 1980, and the St. Louis NAACP, 1930 1964; the Kinloch History Project files, 1915 1980; newsletters and correspondence of the Union Sarah Economic Development Corporation, 1976 1980; histories of the Ferrier Harris Home for the Aged, the Antioch Baptist and First Baptist Churches, and the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; programs and annual reports from the National Housewives League of America, Inc., St. Louis chapter, the Annie Malone Children's Home and the National Association of Negro Musicians, Inc., St. Louis chapter; and photographs of the St. Louis Stars Baseball Team, the Pine Street YMCA, Sumner High and Simmons Schools, 1892 and 1910, records of New Age Federal Savings and Loan Association and Douglass Elementary School. From these and other collections, the Black History Project created a slide presentation on local black history for organizations and groups interested in contributing to or knowing about the collection.

In March 1981 the Black History Project received funding from the University of Missouri St. Louis to continue its work for another year. Ina Watson was appointed director of the project, which moved to the Center for Metropolitan Studies at UMSL. In addition to its continued collection development, the project expanded its slide presentation program for high school use and it supplied all the materials and photographs for the June 1981 issue of PROUD Magazine, a black oriented magazine published in St. Louis. The project also began plans to hold a two day conference on local black history.

The first St. Louis Black History conference was held on November 6 and 7, 1981. Julia Davis and Judge Nathan B. Young served as honorary chairpersons. Local newscaster Julius Hunter provided the keynote address. The Singleton Palmer Dixie Land Six and the Legend Singers of St. Louis performed concerts of ragtime, jazz, blues and black church music. Workshops and panels discussed the historical roles of blacks in St. Louis education, business, labor, social and professional associations, law and religion. The Black History Project presented certificates of appreciation to local black community leaders, including Ernest and DeVerne Calloway, Morris Henderson and Ora Lee Malone. The success of the conference led to two similar events in 1982 and 1983.

In 1982 the project staff also created two photograph displays. The first, entitled Black Historic Landmarks in St. Louis City and County, included photographs of 26 black churches, schools, Masonic Lodges and businesses and was exhibited at the Center for Metropolitan Studies. The second, "A Photographic History of Black St. Louis," co sponsored by the St. Louis Center for Cultural Renewal and the Union Sarah Economic Development Corporation, appeared at the Central West Plaza Building located in the Union Sarah in February 1982. A third display on black churches was exhibited at the St. Paul A.M.E. Church for several weeks in 1983.

The Black History Project received funding from the university until 1984 when Ina Watson accepted a position in Washington, D.C. and the remainder of the project's work was deposited at WHMC.

SCOPE AND CONTENT

The UM-St. Louis Black History Project Collection, 1911-1983, documents many aspects of St. Louis black history as well as the collecting and public relations activities of the project's staff from 1980 to 1983. As noted, many of the collections acquired by the project were copied and placed with WHMC. Consequently, this collection supplements other black history holdings at WHMC St. Louis. Some manuscript material transferred in 1985 was incorporated into existing collections. A list of other duplicates that have been removed appears at the end of the folder listing. Administrative files were placed with University Archives, except for a card file of project contacts, which comprises the second series.

The collection is divided into five series: (1) Collections, 1911-1983, folders 1-140; (2) Project Contacts, 1980-1983, card file; (3) Photographs, 1904-1983; (4) Slides, 1980-1983; (5) Tapes, 1980-1983.

The Collections series documents the black community's wide ranging contributions to the history of St. Louis. The series contains newsletters, reports, fact sheets, fliers, correspondence, newsclippings, programs, surveys, biographical information, news columns, handwritten notes, souvenir programs, questionnaires, directories and photographs of many black individuals and organizations. Many of the folders provide quick reference for biographical information on important individuals in local black history, such as Josephine Baker, Dr. Aldrich Brooks, Judge Clyde Cahill, Moses Dickson, C.W. Gates, Annie Malone, Gloria Pritchard, Wendell Pruitt, James Milton Turner and George Vaughn. The contributions of other black professionals are also documented in the following folders: business, f. 10; medicine, f. 11; education, f. 12 and 13; law, f. 17 and 18; and music, f. 21, 25, 101 and 121.

Julia Davis provided a substantial amount of material on notable people in local black history (f. 40 44) as well as a document on black educators of the early 19th and 20th centuries (f. 12 and 13). Herman Dreer contributed essay notes from the 1940s (f. 44-50), copies of his "Highlights of Negro History" column for the St. Louis Argus, 1966 1973 (f. 66 and 67), and a Metropolitan St. Louis Negro Directory from 1943 (f. 84). Other significant material in this series includes: an educational history of the Berkeley, Kinloch and Ferguson Florissant School District (f. 51); histories of Kinloch (f. 71-78), the Missouri State Association of Negro Teachers, 1884 1948 (f. 87-91), and the St. Louis NAACP, 1914 1955 (f. 96-100). The series is arranged alphabetically by subject. An extensive index appears at the end of the folder listing.

The Project Contacts series, 1980-1983, contains a card file of names and addresses used by the project staff to develop collections and publicize its own efforts. It provides an overview of the individuals and organizations that contributed to the project. The University Archives contains other administrative files from the project.

The Photographs series, 1904 1983, is divided into three sub series: (1) Collection Photographs, 1920-1970s (201.1-201.73), collected by the project includes photographs of Dr. Aldrich M. Brooks, Homer G. Phillips Hospital, Kinloch, the North St. Louis YWCA, the Young Women's Excelsior Club of St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Simmons and Sumner High Schools, and City School Board Superintendent F. Louis Soldan; (2) Exhibit Photographs, copies of photographs, 1904-1982 (201.74-201.107), containing copy print, heavy mounted photographs used in the project's exhibit on black history in February 1982; (3) Black Churches Exhibit Photographs, 1983 (201.108-201.151), which contain the color, heavy mounted photographs exhibited at St. Paul A.M.E. Church in 1983.

The Slides series, 1980 1983, contains slides used in the project's slide presentations. It is divided into five sub series: (1) Individuals, 201.173-201.193; (2) Groups, 201.194-201.205; (3) Places, 201.206-201.201.228; (4) Churches, 201.229-201.340; (5) Black History Conference Photographs, 201.341-201.415. Although a copy of the script for the Black History Slide Show is included with this series (f. 143), it does not contain a complete set of slides used in the presentation.

The Tapes series, 1980 1983, is divided into two sub series: (1) Conference Proceedings, T768-T784, containing speeches and panel discussions given at each of the black history conferences, 1981-1983; and (2) Oral Histories and Lectures, T785-T803, containing oral history interviews conducted by members of the project with local black professionals and lectures by local black leaders recorded by the project.
